British Open Prize Money Increases

An extra 100,000 pounds ($161,590) has been added to the prize money for The British Open Championship at Royal St. George's, taking the total to 3.9 million. pounds ($6.3 million.)
 
But the champion will get none of it. He will receive 700,000 pounds ($1,131,130), the same as Ernie Els won last year. The additional money will be distributed through the field, with an average increase from second place ($678,678) to 70th place ($14,058) of just over three per cent. The last of the non-qualifiers will be guaranteed $3,321.
 
'We have raised the prize money by a modest amount following several years of substantial increases,' said David Hill, championship secretary of the R&A. 'And in continuing with our policy of rewarding players throughout the field, we have distributed the increase through to the player finishing in 70th place.'
