Former U.S. President George Bush, the Honorary Chairman of the second Presidents Cup in 1996, expressed his support for the 2002 matches while in South Africa on a business trip.

'The people of South Africa should be justifiably proud,' Bush said, 'That the Presidents Cup, one of the premier events on the international golfing calendar, will be contested in their beautiful country.

'Perhaps the most impressive aspect of The Presidents Cup is that the players do not compete for a purse, only for the honor of representing their countries. '

Bush made the comments while visiting with South Africa's Minister of Sport Ngconde Balfour to talk about the 2002 Presidents Cup.
