Choi Named 2002 Asian Golfer of the Year


AsianPGAKorean K.J. Choi was presented as the winner of the 2002 Johnnie Walker Asian Golfer of the Year in Perth, Australia, Sunday at the Johnnie Walker Classic.
Choi, K.J.Choi became the fourth Asian and first Korean to capture a PGA Tour event as he won the Compaq Classic of New Orleans last year. He then added a second title to his resume by winning the Tampa Bay Classic in September.
Choi, who is competing in this week's Buick Invitational on the PGA Tour, joins T.C. Chen, and Japan's Shigeki Maruyama and Isao Aoki as the only Asian golfers to win on the PGA Tour.
He also teamed with compatriot Hur Suk-ho at last year's World Cup in Mexico and placed third.
The muscular Choi, who trained as a powerlifter before making the leap to golf, finished 17th on the 2002 PGA Tour money list.
