Commerce Bank Event Rewards Winners

Something about the Commerce Bank Championship on the Champions Tour whoever wins it tends to win it again in rapid-fire order.
That is a good omen for Ron Streck. He won it last year after firing a 62 in the opening round. Streck had only one top-10 finish in his rookie season in 2005, but it was a big one. This year has been much the same ' he has nary a finish in the top 28. In the season-opener in Hawaii, he finished T-29.
But this tournament has a peculiar way of handsomely rewarding winners who come back the following year. In 2004, Jim Thorpe returned to successfully defend his 2003 title. Ditto Bruce Fleisher in 1999-2000. Lee Trevino won back-to-back here in 94-95. And George Archer won it three times in a row from 90-92.
Loren Roberts continues to lead the Champions Tour money list, but now by a narrow margin over Jay Haas. Haas enters the Commerce Bank tournament with three straight victories, including the Senior PGA Championship.
I knew that I obviously played well to win a couple events recently, said Haas, but I'm swinging well, hitting a lot of good shots. I'm really putting well. Starting at the Legends tournament in Savannah, I really started rolling the ball well and I just have confidence on the greens. My pace is really good.
I guess that I know over the years and we all know that when it's going good, you got to get it. Because it's going to go away eventually. Who knows when? But you just have to get it while it's good and just hang in there when it's not.
Over-all, he says, everything is going well.
I changed drivers, changed irons, maybe two and a half months ago, and in those, those seem to be working really well and I'm putting really well. So I guess I don't think so much about the past or my streak that I'm on, I just know I'm playing well and excited to go to the golf course every day.
