Couples and Calc Upended in California

Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia came up short in their bid to repeat as champions at the Hyundai Team Matches, falling to PGA Player of the Year nominee Rich Beem and PGA Rookie of the Year nominee Peter Lonard, 2-and-1.
Couples started off strong with birdies on the first two holes to go 2-up, but the young guns responded with a birdie at the third.
'It was pretty humiliating after the first couple of holes. I thought it was going to be a very short day,' said Lonard. 'We then birdied three and four to get it back to all square. Obviously, if they had won those holes, we could have been in serious trouble.'
Beem and Lonard went on to birdie every par-3 at the Golf Links at St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa. Calc had a chance to extend the match on the 17th but his birdie chip never threatened the hole.
'We partnered up very well this weekend,' said Beem. 'Fortunately, we made a ton of birdies. Peter made most of them. I just made them wherever I could. We compliment each other very well.'
In both the LPGA and Senior divisions, the defending champions were able to retain their titles.

Dana Quigley and Allen Doyle took out Jim Thorpe and John Jacobs 2-and-1, as Quigley blasted his ball out of a greenside bunker and into the hole on the par-4 17th.
'Our goal last year was to win so they'd have to invite us back again this year,' Doyle said. 'So we made that our goal again this year.'

The team of Lorie Kane and Janice Moodie successfully defended their title by ousting the formidable tandem of Juli Inkster and Dottie Pepper 3-and-2 in the LPGA division.
Kane and Moodie birdied six of the first eight holes to gain momentum of the match despite six birdies on the day from Inkster and Pepper. Kane and Moodie tallied nine birdies and no bogeys on the day.
'Lorie started well and I made my share of birdies,' said Moodie. 'We just had them on different holes. That's something you have to do in match play.'
In the consolation matches Jerry Kelly and Chris Smith beat Peter Jacobsen and Scott McCarron 2-up in the PGA Tour division.
Doug Tewell and Bruce Lietzke bested Bruce Fleisher and David Graham 4-and-3 in the Champions Tour.
In the LPGA, Beth Bauer and Grace Park defeated Laura Diaz and Heather Bowie 1-up.
