Duke Back on Track at Bryan National

College CentralBROWNS SUMMIT, NC--- Three-time defending champion Duke recorded an opening round 289, and leads by five shots after the first day of play at the Seventh Annual Bryan National Collegiate. The tournament is being held at the par 72, 6074-yard Bryan Park Champions Course.
 
The tournament is co-hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Wake Forest University.
 
Duke, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation, leads by five shots over Auburn and Purdue. Vanderbilt and Florida are six shots back at 295, while Wake Forest and Oklahoma State are tied for sixth at 298.
 
The 2002 Bryan National Medalist Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke, along with Beth Hermes from Purdue, hold a share of the individual lead after carding a 2-under-par 70 in the windy and cold conditions. Allison Hanna (Ohio State), Sarah Johnston (Furman), Brittany Lang (Duke) and Onnarin Sattayabanphot (Purdue) were the only other golfers to break par on the afternoon, posting 1-under-par 71's and are tied for third.
 
Other Blue Devils are right off the lead as Liz Janangelo and Leigh Anne Hardin are tied for 15th with ha 74 and Anna Grzebien is tied for 29th with a 75 after day one.
