His prophecy may have been a week premature.
Duval fired his lowest round of the year, a 9-under 63, to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the five-day Invensys Classic at Las Vegas.
I felt like I had left a lot of shots out there. I shot 15-under after the first three rounds and I was really disappointed in my score, and today I kind of capitalized on more of my opportunities, Duval said.
'Tomorrow I have one goal and that's to win the golf tournament.'
Jeff Sluman (68) and Jim Fuyrk (69) share second place at 22-under. Jonathan Byrd (64) and Stuart Appleby (67) are at minus 21.
'The course is just set up to make birdies,' Appleby said. 'You're just going to see birdie, birdie, birdie out there.'
Furyk was the 54-hole leader. The three-time Las Vegas champion has still yet to make a bogey in the tournament, but recorded only three birdies Saturday. Two of those birdies, however, came over his final three holes.
The tournament scoring record is 329 (30-under-par), set by Andrew Magee and D.A. Weibring in 1991, and matched by Bob Estes last year.
This is the first time since the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic ' also a 90-hole event ' that Duval has shot four consecutive sub-70 rounds.
Hes only earned one top-10 (a tie for fourth at the Memorial) this season; though, he has been playing better of late. He shot 65 in the final round of the NEC Invitational, and again in the second round at the American Express Championship. Last week, he opened in 64-69 to take the 36-hole lead at the Michelob Championship, but plummeted into a tie for 25th by Sundays close.
Winless since his 2001 British Open triumph, Duval started the day five off the lead. He birdied his first three holes, and six of his first 10 at the TPC at Summerlin. He took his first lead of the tournament by making a 10-footer for birdie at the 12th, and moved two clear of the field with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 13th.
His ninth and final birdie of the day came courtesy of another 10-footer at 16.
Im healthy, I have no lingering injuries right now which is a nice change over the course of two and a half years, Duval stated. Im excited for the rest of the year and really getting to go next year.
