Duval Ties for 60th in Texas

2005 Valero Texas OpenThe last time the Presidents Cup was contested in the United States, David Duval was center stage.

The No. 3-ranked player in the world, Duval went 3-2-0 in helping the Americans route the Internationals, 21 -10 .

Things, of course, are far different five years later. Duval is now ranked 724th in the world. Hes no longer even a consideration for representation of his country in international team competitions.

This week, half a country away from the Virginia-based Presidents Cup, Duval earned his best finish of the season, a tie for 60th in the Valero Texas Open.

Duval opened 69-68 for a 3-under total at LaCantera Golf Club to make his first cut of the year. He followed with weekend rounds of even-par 70 and 4-over 74.

'It's a cycle that needed to be broken, but I've been playing a lot better than my scores have reflected for the last six weeks,' Duval said after making the cut. 'Each day I seem to hit the highest score I possibly could, the last six or eight rounds I've played. It's no different this week so far. I've hit it really well, just made a couple stupid mistakes.'

Duvals last cut made was the 2004 Michelin Championship at Las Vegas. He was 0-for-17 in 05. If that doesnt illustrate just how bad things were for him prior to this week, this marked not only the first time he had shot back-to-back sub-70 scores this year, but in his previous 34 stroke-play rounds, he had but one under-par score, compared to six in the 80s.

The 13-time tour winner and 2001 Open champion qualified for weekend play by limiting his mistakes. He had only four bogeys and one double bogey through 36 holes, while making nine birdies.

He had five birdies, seven bogeys and one double bogey over his final two rounds.
