Els Reappears in the Dubai Desert

RSS

After taking a week off for the WGC - Match Play event, the European Tour is back on schedule and welcomes some of the top names in golf for the Dubai Desert Classic.

Ernie Els is also back in action following a three week sabatical and will be joined by European stalwarts Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Defending champion Mark O'Meara will be on hand to defend the title he won last year over Ryder Cupper Paul McGinley. It was O'Meara's first win since his monster 1998 season in which he won both the Masters and British Open.

Els, who was the only top ranked player not at La Costa for the Match Play Championship, will be well rested in his effort to win the Dubai Desert Classic for a record third time. He won the event in 1994 and again in 2002.

Els hopes the time off will have no effect on what has already been a pretty productive start of the season. Although without a victory, the South African has posted a second, third, fifth and sixth place finish in the four tournaments he has entered.

Already one of the richest events on the European circuit with a $2,200,000 purse, the tournament will also attract former British Open winners Paul Lawrie and Ben Curtis, as well as 1992 Masters champion Ian Woosnam.

A pair of winners from the 2005 schedule, Niclas Fasth and young gun Nick Dougherty are in the field as they'll battle Els and Co. for the top prize.

Other former champions on hand include Thomas Bjrn (2001), Robert-Jan Derksen (2003), Richard Green (1997) and David Howell (1999).

Tiger Woods, who played and finished fifth last year, decided to skip the tournament this year.

The event is being played for 16th year at the Emirates Golf Course in Dubai.
