European Influence Present at Players

Continuing the trend of European professionals traveling to the United States to compete, a record-setting number of European Tour stars will be on hand for this weeks Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
While just six played in last seasons edition, a full 21 will be on hand for this years competition.
Newcomers Michael Campbell and Padraig Harrington are two of those who will join in the action. They, along with Angel Cabrera and Eduardo Romero, will join fellow European Tour regulars at the Players, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood, and Ernie Els, as first-timers in this richest event of the season.
Not since Sandy Lyle in 1987 has a European player championed at this event. A few have been close at times, however.
Montgomerie finished second here in 1996 and tied for third last year, while Nick Faldo was runner-up one year, as was Bernhard Langer on two different occasions.
Six million dollars are on the table this week at the Players, with the winner grabbing $1,080,000 of that amount.
