At weeks end, the top-10 on the points standings will automatically qualify for play at The Belfry next month.
Outside of that magical number, captain Sam Torrance will be allowed two additional picks to round out his twelve team members.
While rumor has it that Torrance is leaning heavily towards Jesper Parnevik and Sergio Garcia as those two selections, nothing is even remotely certain.
And all in contention at this juncture know it.
Nos. 7 through 14 on the list will probably be the slots of most interest this week, as they have teetered back and forth over the last few weeks and months between being in and being out.
They are all scheduled to compete this week at the BMW.
In order, they are: Niclas Fasth (7th), Paul McGinley (8th), Bernhard Langer (9th), Phillip Price (10th), Ian Poulter (12th), Andrew Oldcorn (13th) and Andrew Coltart (14th).
Other members of the tour who have already locked up their positions are also playing this week, such as Colin Montgomerie, who sits comfortably in fourth on the rankings, and Padraig Harrington, who is currently third.
Thomas Bjorn is also in the field.
Not only is Bjorn No. 2 on the rankings, but he is also the defending champion from last year, when he shot a final round 67 that was good enough to beat out Langer by three shots at 20-under-par 268.
Torrance himself is in the field, but you can bet that his primary concern this week is not winning, but analyzing and studying.
His final two picks will be made sometime following this weekend.
