First Stage of PGA Tour Q-School Underway

PGA Tour (75x100)The first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School got underway last week at five locations around the country, with 117 players advancing into the second stage, which begins on Nov. 4.
 
At the first stop at the Dayton Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Nev., Brett Wayment fired an opening-round of 67 and backed it up with three consecutive scores of 68.
 
At 17-under-par 271, he took medallist honors, finishing two shots better than three others. Twenty-four golfers finished at 6-under-par or better through the four days to advance to the next stage.
 
At the second spot at the Laurel Island Links in Kingsland, Ga., Ryan Lavoie blew by the rest of the field, going 13-under 275 through four rounds of play.
 
Lavoie ended five shots better than four golfers who finished at 8-under, and he led a group of 24 golfers all of whom will advance.
 
Kris Cox also was a first-stage medallist, as the Dallas resident shot a final-round 69 over the Woodbridge Country Club to end two better than Kasey Young at 11-under 277.
 
Cox headed a group of 23 players who finished at 3-over or better into the second round of qualifying.
 
At the fourth location, highly-touted Luke Donald of England blitzed the rest of the field at the La Purisima Country Club in Lompoc, Calif., shooting 14-under-par 274, and leading a group of 24 players into the second stage.
 
Donald, the 2000 NCAA Player of the Year from Northwestern, completely lapped the rest of the competitors, finishing eight strokes better than Alex Rodger in second.
 
At the final stop in Lutz, Fla., Akio Sadakata ended at 9-under 275 over the TPC of Tampa Bay to finish four strokes better than Jamie Neher and George McNeill.
 
Sadakata finished medallist and leads 22 players into the second stage.
