Five Share Lead at US Amateur Public Links

RSS

In a field that was once the haven of working men, five students took the lead in the first round of stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the 7,005-yard, par 71 Pecan Valley Golf Club course.

Nick Cassini, 22, Athens, Ga., Matt Cohn, 20, La Jolla, Calif., Kyle Willmann, 21, Edmond, Okla., Tom Johnson, 19, Fair Oaks, Calif., and James Vargas, 17, Miami, Fla., were at one-under-par 70. Cassini is a student at the University of Georgia, Cohn at the University of Oklahoma, Willmann at Texas Tech, Johnson at Northwestern and Vargas at Christopher Columbus High School.

Their scores were one stroke better than three players who came in at 71 on this historic course, which hosted the 1968 PGA Championship.

The Amateur Public Links, the national championship for public course players, has historically attracted working men from across the nation. This year the 156-player field includes truck drivers, financial analysts, and golf course superintendents but is dominated by 85 college students and seven high school players.

D.J. Trahan, Inman, S.C., the defending champion, was at five-over-par 76.

Following Tuesdays second round of stroke play, the low 64 scorers will advance to match play with a 36-hole final deciding the championship on Saturday.

The Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, of which ten are strictly for amateurs.
