Eighteen players are within two shots of the first-round lead at The Transamerica in Napa, Ca. Leading the way are Hugh Baiocchi, John Mahaffey, Jim Colbert and Jesse Patino, each of whom shot rounds of 6-under-par 66.
Jim Thorpe and Vicente Fernandez are tied for 5th place at 5-under. Meanwhile, defending champion Bruce Fleisher is two shots back, tied at 4-under-par with 11 others.
Patino and Baiocchi are each to trying to get what Mahaffey and Colbert already have - a spot inside the top 31 on the money list. The top 31 following the season's penultimate event, the SBC Senior Classic, gain entrance into the Tour Championship. Patino is currently in 47th place. Baiocchi resides in 37th position.
Of the top 18 players, only four have won in 2000 - Fleisher, Allen Doyle, Leonard Thompson and Dana Quigley. Fleisher has won four times this season, but hasn't stepped into the winner's circle since the Lightpath Long Island Classic in July.
Fleisher is battling Larry Nelson for Player of the Year honors. Nelson is not in attendance this week. Fleisher currently trails his rival by $271,749 in earnings. First place this week is worth $165K.
