College CentralThe No. 1 University of Florida mens golf team won its first round match against Wichita State, 4-0-1, and advanced to the second round before play was suspended at the Hooters Mens Match Play Collegiate Championship at Barefoot Resort Friday.
 
Florida, the No. 1 seed, and eighth-seeded Texas were tied at 2-2 when play was suspended Friday evening due to darkness. Gator senior Camilo Villegas was 1-up on Jeff Bell of Texas with one hole left to play. The two will resume play Saturday morning.
 
Continuing his hot streak after winning his last tournament, sophomore Matt Every won both of his matches on the day, including a win against Jason Hartwick of Texas in the second round. Hartwick entered the tournament ranked as the No. 14 player in the country in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, but Every, after falling behind on the third hole, took the lead for good on the sixth hole and eventually won 3-and-2. In the first round, Every defeated Wichita States Judd Easterling 4-and-3.
 
Freshman Jessie Mudd won his second round match against Texas after halving against Wichita State. Mudd led from start to finish against Rusty Kennedy of Texas and won 5-and-4. After leading by as many as three holes in the first round, Wichita States Jesse Schulte came back to tie Mudd on the 11th hole and the two played even the rest of the way.
 
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier won his first round match against Wichita State before falling in the second round. Stegmaiers opening match against WSUs Ty Cline was close until Stegmaier won the 16th hole and held on to win 1-up. In the second round, Stegmaier battled the No. 27 player in the nation in Matthew Rosenfeld of Texas and was all square through 13 holes, but Rosenfeld won holes 14 and 15 to eventually take the match 2-up.
 
Seeing action in his second tournament this year, sophomore Ryan Cochran finished at 1-1 on the day after winning his opening round match and falling in the second round. Cochran led Wichita States Cameron Bishop by as many as three holes midway through the match before the two were tied after 16 holes. Cochran won the 17th to win the match 1-up. In the second round, Cochran fell behind early to Shaun Goodwin of Texas and lost 6-and-5.
 
Play at the championship resumes Saturday morning.
