BILLY CASPER WON 51 TIMES ON THE PGA TOUR HITTING A FADE. HE WON TEN TIMES ON THE SENIOR PGA TOUR HITTING A DRAW. MEET MAJOR CHAMPION BILLY CASPER, NOW, ON GOLF TALK LIVE.

OF THE FOUR BEST PLAYERS OF THE 1960'S, BILLY CASPER WAS SO MUCH LIKE ONE OF THE GUYS IN YOUR SATURDAY FOURSOME. HIS LOOKS AND PERSONALITY THAT YOU CAN BE FORGIVEN AND YOU NEED A REFRESHER COURSE ON HIS PLAYING RECORD. A RECORD THAT RANKS AMONG THE VERY BEST OF ALL GREAT PLAYERS, GOING ALL THE WAY BACK TO ALLEN ROBERTSON.

FIRST MAN TO RETURN A SCORE LESS THAN 80 IN 1858. CASPER PLAYED HIS BEST GOLF WHEN ARNIE, JACK AND GARY WERE PLAYING THEIRS.

PALMER'S CHARISMA AND POWER AND SEX APPEAL WAS AND IS UNLIKE ANYONE YOU PLAY WITH UNLESS YOU REGULARLY PLAY WITH ARNIE HIMSELF. NICKLAUS' FIRE POWER, BRAIN POWER AND PUTTING TOUCH PROBABLY DON'T EVEN REMOTELY REMIND YOU OF ANYONE YOU KNOW AND IF THERE'S ANOTHER CHARACTER QUITE LIKE GARY PLAYER, WE DEFY YOU TO POINT HIM OUT BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE BILLY CASPER WHICH IS ONE REASON WHY HE ISN'T THOUGHT OF AS A CHARACTER LIKE THE OTHER THREE ARE BUT BILLY HAS CHARACTER, IS A CHARACTER TO HIS FRIENDS AND PLAYED A GAME WITH A QUIET SET OF CHARACTERISTICS THAT WERE NOT ROOTED IN A CARNIVAL OR ROCK AND ROLL ATMOSPHERE.

CASPER PLAYED SAFELY WITHIN HIMSELF WITHOUT IMPATIENCE OR GREED. HE FAVORED THE PERCENTAGES THAT WERE SWINGING HARD AND ALWAYS ATTEMPTING TO LEAVE THE EASIEST SHOT TO PLAY. THIS CONSERVATIVE PHILOSOPHY DID NOT PAY OFF IN POPULARITY CONTESTS BUT IT WAS A WINNING FORMULA FOR WINNING 51 TIMES ON THE PGA TOUR. CASPER WON THE VARDON TROPHY IN 1960, '63, '65, '66, '68 FOR LOWEST SCORING AVERAGE.

HE WON THE U.S. OPEN ON THE BIG COURSE AT WINGED FOOT IN 1959. HE BEAT ARNIE FOR THE SAME TITLE IN THE PLAY OFF AT OLYMPIC IN 1966. BILLY BEAT FRIEND GENE LITTLER TO WIN THE MASTERS IN ANOTHER PLAY OFF IN 1970. HIS PEERS WILL TELL YOU HE COULD ALWAYS PUT THE BALL IN PLAY, ESPECIALLY UNDER PRESSURE. EVERYONE WILL TELL YOU HE WAS ONE OF A HANDFUL OF GREATEST PUTTERS TO EVER ROLL A PUTT AND NO ONE CAN GIVE YOU A REASON TO DENY CASPER A PLACE WITH PALMER, PLAYER AND NICKLAUS IN A GROUPING KNOWN AS THE BIG FOUR.

Peter Kessler
WELCOME TO GOLF TALK LIVE. I'M PETER KESSLER. GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME, BILLY CASPER. AND A GREAT PLEASURE TO SEE YOU MY FRIEND.

Billy Casper
PETER, IT'S ALWAYS GREAT TO BE WITH YOU AND IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SIR.

Peter Kessler
IT HAS AND IT'S BEEN SO LONG THAT I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO WISH YOU A BELATED HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY.

Billy Casper
WELL YOU KNOW I, BACK WHEN I WAS A YOUNG FELLOW, IF I THOUGHT I'D STILL BE PLAYING COMPETITIVE GOLF WHEN I WAS 70 I'D HAVE SAID I MIGHT NOT EVEN LIVE THAT LONG, AND, I JUST, KEEP GOING.
IT'S LIKE OLD MAN RIVER.

Peter Kessler
DIDN'T YOU OUTLIVE ALL THE DOCTORS WHO TOLD YOU YOU WOULDN'T MAKE IT THIS FAR?

Billy Casper
SEVERAL OF THEM. (LAUGHS)

Peter Kessler
(LAUGHS) SPEAKING OF YOUNG MEN, HOW INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS WAS IT FOR YOU TO PLAY WITH YOUR SON BOBBY THIS WEEKEND IN THE OFFICE DEPOT FATHER SON CHALLENGE?

Billy Casper
YOU KNOW ANY TIME YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY COMPETITIVE GOLF WITH ONE OF YOUR SONS IT'S JUST A TREMENDOUS EXPERIENCE BUT NOT ONLY DID I HAVE BOBBY BUT I HAD MY

YOUNGEST SON, TOMMY, CADDYING FOR ME AND BOBBY HAD HIS SON, MY GRANDSON, MASON, CADDYING FOR HIM SO WE HAD A FAMILY AFFAIR OUT THERE ON THE GOLF COURSE FOR ALL WEEK AND WE JUST HAD SOME WONDERFUL TIMES

TOGETHER. WE HAD THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY WITH TOM WEISCOFF AND HIS SON, ERIC, THE FIRST ROUND AND THEY SHOT LIGHTS OUT. IT WAS JUST A JOY TO WATCH THEM PLAY AND THEN I PLAYED WITH MY OLD FRIEND,

TONY, I MEAN LEE TREVINO AND IT, AND HIS SON TONY AND, LEE IS SUCH A CHARACTER. GOSH HE'S, HE'S ONE OF THE GREAT ENTERTAINERS THAT I HAVE EVER MET AND HE'S PROBABLY THE MOST ENJOYABLE MAN TO PLAY GOLF WITH THAT I KNOW.

Peter Kessler
HOW DOES HE RANK ON YOUR ALL TIME BALL STRIKING LIST?

Billy Casper
WELL YOU KNOW, LEE DEFINITELY HAD HIS DAY. THERE'S NO QUESTION ABOUT THAT AND PROBABLY HE AND, AND RODRIQUEZ HAVE THE GREATEST ONE LINERS THAT YOU COULD HEAR AND YOU

NEVER HEAR THE SAME ONE FROM THEM. THEY'RE VERY, VERY CLEVER. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THEY HAVE WRITERS OR WHAT, PETER.

Peter Kessler
THERE WERE A LOT OF OBVIOUSLY FAMOUS DADS AND NOT TO FAMOUS SONS. YOU ARE FAMOUS AND YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL. YOU'VE GOT 18 GRANDCHILDREN, TWO GREAT

GRANDCHILDREN, 11 CHILDREN, BUT MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ARE NOT FAMOUS PEOPLE. HOW DO YOU RECONCILE ALL OF THAT FOR YOUR FAMILY?

Billy Casper
WELL YOU KNOW I THINK THERE ARE SOME OF THEM THAT REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED YOU KNOW IN MY CAREER AND ONLY TIME WILL THEY FIND OUT WHEN THEY STUDY ABOUT PAPA, AS I'M CALLED BY MY GRAND CHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN,

BUT YOU KNOW YOU'RE YOUNG AND YOU START A FAMILY WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND YOU PLAY LIKE MAD AND THAT'S YOUR DESIRE DAY IN AND DAY OUT IS TO PLAY GOLF AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR

FAMILY AND THEY SUFFER BECAUSE YOU'RE AWAY A LOT. I KNOW EARLY ON IN MY CAREER MY OLDER CHILDREN NOW EXPRESS TO ME HOW MUCH IT WAS HARD

FOR THEM TO HAVE THEIR FATHER AND THEIR MOTHER LEAVE PERIODICALLY TO GO OUT AND BE ON THE TOUR AND YET WE HAVE SOME REALLY TREMENDOUS YOUNG

PEOPLE. I MEAN OUR, OUR YOUNG, OUR YOUNG CHILDREN AND OUR OLDER CHILDREN ARE JUST REALLY TREMENDOUS PEOPLE. THEY'VE HAD SOMETHING IN THEIR LIFE THAT PROBABLY A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE

DON'T HAVE AND THAT'S THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW PEOPLE. TO TRAVEL TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD AND GET TO SEE, GAIN AN EDUCATION. I CAN TELL YOU OF SOMETHING THAT JUST HAPPENED

RECENTLY, BOBBY AND HIS OLDEST SON WENT TO MOROCCO WITH US WHICH WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND BECAUSE THERE WERE VERY FEW AMERICANS

THERE BECAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 11TH OF SEPTEMBER, WE ONLY HAD A PARTY OF 18 THAT TRAVELED OVER WITH US. MY SON BOBBY WAS THE ONLY AMERICAN PRO THAT PLAYED.

THE REST OF THEM WERE EUROPEAN
PROFESSIONALS AND SEVERAL OF THE AMATEURS THAT HAD COMMITTED TO GO DIDN'T GO AND SO THE SPONSOR OVER THERE ASKED MY GRANDSON, ASHTON, IF HE WOULD LIKE TO PLAY IN THE PRO-AM

AND HE AND HIS TEAM WOUND UP WINNING THE PRO-AM TIED FOR WINNING AND LOST IN A CARD MATCH OFF AND SO HE RECEIVED A WONDERFUL TROPHY BUT HE SAID 'DAD, YOU KNOW, I LEARNED MORE HERE IN MOROCCO IN A WEEK THAN I LEARNED AN ENTIRE YEAR IN SCHOOL'

AND THAT'S WHAT WE COULD GIVE TO OUR CHILDREN EVEN THOUGH WE WERE AWAY FROM THEM A LOT. I THINK EACH ONE OF THEM NOW APPRECIATED I KNOW, WHEN I WENT TO SWITZERLAND ONE TIME, MY DAUGHTER WAS A NICE TEENAGER

AND SHE DIDN'T WANT TO GO AND I SAID 'HONEY, YOU MUST GO. YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN SOMETHING AND I SAID IN FACT YOU'RE GOING TO MEET PEOPLE THAT CAN SPEAK SEVEN OR EIGHT LANGUAGES' AND SO WE ARRIVED IN SWITZERLAND.

WE GOT IN A CAB TO GO TO THE GOLF, TO GO TO THE HOTEL AND I SAID TO THE CAB DRIVER, HAS, 'HOW MANY LANGUAGES CAN YOU SPEAK?' HE SAID 'WELL' HE SAID 'I CAN SPEAK FIVE FLUENTLY AND CONVERSE IN THREE OTHERS'.

(LAUGHS) AND SO IT PROVED THE POINT,
BUT SHE DID HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME EVEN THOUGH SHE DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO GO.

Peter Kessler
WHEN WE COME BACK WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE WONDERFUL TIMES THAT YOU HAD PARTICULARLY ON THE GOLF COURSE, IN JUST A MOMENT.

(WRITTEN TEXT)
DARK HORSE WINS OPEN CROWN

BROADCASTER (MALE):
THE 59TH U.S. OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE WINGED FOOT COURSE AT MAMARONECK NEW YORK.

HOGAN STARTING AT 211. THREE STROKES BEHIND CASPER... CASPER, THE MAN IN FRONT.

MIKE SUTCHAC, 213, STILL A POSSIBILITY.

ROSSBERG VERY MUCH IN THE PICTURE

AND SNEAD, STILL SEEKING THE ONE BIG TITLE HE HASN'T WON... GALE WINDS ADD TO THE HAZARDS.

HOGAN AND SNEAD GRADUALLY DROP BACK AS IT DEVELOPS INTO A THREE WAY STRUGGLE. WHILE CASPER FIGHTS TO HANG ON, SUTCHAC AND ROSSBERG COME ON WITH STRONG CHALLENGES.

HERE'S SUTCHAC AT THE NEXT TO THE LAST HOLE, STILL CHASING CASPER.

(MUSIC)

ROSSBERG NEEDS A BIRDIE TO CATCH UP BUT THIS IS AS CLOSE AS HE CAN COME.

CASPER IS STILL IN COMMAND AS HE COMES TO THE FINAL HOLE. THE STOUT THROW FROM THE GOLDEN SLOPE

FINISHES WITH 282, TWO OVER PAR FOR THE TOURNAMENT, JUST ENOUGH TO BEAT ROSSBERG OUT BY ONE STROKE. IT'S A $12,000 TRIUMPH FOR BILL CASPER AND THAT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING OF WHAT

THE TITLE IS WORTH TO AN OPEN CHAMPION. A HAPPY DAY FOR THE CALIFORNIA COUPLE.

Peter Kessler
NOW A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW YOU TOOK A MERE 114 PUTTS OVER THE FOUR ROUNDS AT WINGED FOOT. ARGUABLY THE TOUGHEST SET OF PUTTING PLATFORMS IN

THE WORLD, BUT DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR ABILITY TO PUT THE BALL IN PLAY WAS UNDER RATED AND UNDER APPRECIATED GENERALLY?

Billy Casper
WELL YOU KNOW, PETER, WHEN YOU LOOK AT MY ENTIRE CAREER WHERE I WON 51 TOURNAMENTS. WON THE VARDON TROPHY FIVE TIMES. YOU DIDN'T RELY ON

ONE PHASE OF YOUR GAME TO CARRY YOU TO THAT POINT. YOU HAD TO HAVE A WELL ROUNDED GAME TO BE ABLE TO
ACCOMPLISH THOSE FEATS. THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ONE OTHER PLAYER THAT HAS WON THE VARDON TROPHY FIVE TIMES

AND THAT WAS TREVINO WHO WE TALKED ABOUT A LITTLE EARLIER, BUT I THINK TIGER WOODS HE MAY DO THINGS THAT WILL STAND UP FOREVER BECAUSE

I THINK HE HAS PROBABLY THE GREATEST TALENT OF ANY GOLFER THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. HE HAS NOTHING RIGHT NOW TO CLUTTER HIS MIND WHICH DOES HAPPEN TO US. WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS

THAT CLUTTER OUT MIND, PARTICULARLY AS WE GET A FAMILY AND AS WE START TO GET OLDER AND GET INVOLVED IN A LOT OF OTHER THINGS YOU KNOW AND IT, IT DRAWS FROM YOUR ABILITY TO PERFORM AND AS YET HE IS NOT OF THAT

AGE YET BUT HIS TALENT, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PLAYER WITH A GREATER TALENT. YOU KNOW BUTCH HARMON HAS BEEN A FRIEND FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. AS I VISITED WITH HIM AFTER THE FIRST ROUND WHEN HE WON AT AUGUSTA.

THE FIRST YEAR HE WON AT AUGUSTA AND HE SHOT 40 THE FRONT NINE AND THIRTY THE BACK NINE. IT WAS JUST AMAZING AND I WAS SITTING AT OUR CLUB ABOUT THREE MONTHS BEFORE

AND SOME OF THE MEMBERS SAID WHO DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO WIN THE MASTERS THIS YEAR? I SAID TIGER WOODS BY TEN SHOTS. THEY FELL RIGHT ON THE FLOOR. ONE OF THEM WENT OUT AND BET ON HIM, AND I WAS WRONG. HE WON BY TWELVE.

Peter Kessler
RIGHT.

Billy Casper
(LAUGHS)

Peter Kessler
NOW WHEN YOU WON AT WINGED FOOT IN '59 AND REALLY FROM THAT TIME PERIOD LOOKING BACK IT WAS ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT A TRUE TEST OF A CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER, AMONG OTHER THINGS, WAS HIS OR HER ABILITY TO HIT

LONG IRONS AND OR FAIRWAY WOODS TO WELL PROTECTED GREENS. DOES YOUR COMMENT THAT YOU JUST MADE NOW ABOUT TIGER SUGGEST THAT YOU COMPLETELY APPROVE OF THE LENGTHENING OF AUGUSTA NATIONAL THAT HAS JUST TAKEN PLACE UNDER TOM FAZIO'S HAND

IN TERMS OF CARRYING OUT THOSE CHANGES SO THAT MORE LONG IRONS AND FAIRWAY WOODS AND A COMPLETE GAME, THE KIND THAT YOU EXHIBITED WHEN YOU WON YOUR OPENS WILL HAVE TO BE EXHIBITED BY THE NEXT MASTERS CHAMPION?

Billy Casper
WELL I, I'M NOT FULLY AWARE YET OF ALL THE CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN DONE AT AUGUSTA. ANYTIME YOU ADD LENGTH TO GOLF COURSES YOU'RE JUST FEEDING INTO THE HANDS OF THE LONG PLAYER, THE LONG HITTER, PARTICULARLY AT AUGUSTA BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY

SLOPES THAT YOU DRIVE INTO ON YOUR DRIVES WHERE AS IT BECOMES A MUCH LONGER GOLF COURSE FOR THE AVERAGE HITTER OR THE SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE HITTER WHERE AS THE LONG HITTER CAN CARRY IT OVER THOSE
SLOPES AND GET ANOTHER 30 OR 40 OR 50

YARDS. IT MAKES IT THAT MUCH EASIER FOR THE LONG HITTER. I'M VERY INTERESTED IN SEEING THE OUTCOME OF THE MASTERS THIS YEAR. I THINK TIGER'S

GOING TO BE RIGHT THERE AGAIN KNOCKING ON THE DOOR BECAUSE OF HIS TENACITY WHERE THE GAME OF GOLF IS CONCERNED AND HIS UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO PLAY ALL GOLF COURSES NO MATTER WHERE HE PLAYS HE KNOWS HOW TO PLAY ALL TYPES OF GOLF COURSES

AND AS BUTCH TOLD ME, ONE OF THE TIMES WHEN WE WERE TALKING HE SAID YOU KNOW, HE'S WILLING TO TRY ANYTHING AND PERFECT IT SO THAT
WHEN HE HAS A SHOT, LIKE A 213 YARD

SHOT OUT OF A SAND TRAP, THE CANADIAN OPEN TO A, AN AREA IN THE GREEN THAT'S ABOUT HALF THIS BIG AS THIS AREA WE'RE IN RIGHT HERE WITH WATER ALL AROUND AND HE PULLS IT OFF. IT WAS, HE KNEW WHAT HE COULD DO.

Peter Kessler
HE'D HIT THAT SHOT

IN PRACTICE A COUPLE OF TIMES.

Billy Casper
SURE

HE'D DONE IT. HE'D DONE IT.

Peter Kessler
YOU WERE THOUGHT TO BE PARTICULARLY CONSERVATIVE FROM TEE TO GREEN BUT PRETTY AGGRESSIVE ON THE GREENS. HOW WOULD YOU

CHARACTERIZE TIGER'S PHILOSOPHY RELATIVE TO THE ONE THAT YOU EMPLOYED?

Billy Casper
WELL I THINK HE'S PROBABLY MORE AGGRESSIVE ON THE GREENS THAN I WAS. I ALWAYS TRIED TO, ANY LENGTHY PUTT I HAD ALWAYS TRIED TO PUT IT IN WITH TWO FOOT OR THREE FOOT CIRCLE

AROUND THE HOLE. WHETHER IT WAS SHORT, TO THE RIGHT OR LONG IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE, OR TO THE LEFT, BUT I WANTED TO GET IT IN THAT CIRCLE SO THAT I COULD HOLE THE NEXT PUTT AND I WORKED HARD ON THE SHORT PUTTS, PROBABLY SPENDING TWO THIRDS

OF MY TIME PRACTICING THE SHORT PUTT AS THE LONG PUTT AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED AT WINGED FOOT, YOU KNOW YOU'RE HITTING A LOT OF SHOTS INTO THOSE GREENS AND THOSE GREENS ARE HEAVILY TRAPPED AND EVERYTHING AND

YOU DIDN'T HIT ALL THE GREENS SO YOU HAD TO HAVE A VERY, VERY SOUND SHORT GAME AND OF COURSE I HAD 114 PUTTS SO THAT TOLD YOU THAT I HAD A VERY SOUND SHORT GAME BECAUSE I WAS COMING OUT OF THE, THE SAND TRAPS AND ONE PUTTING A LOT OF THE GREENS

AND COMING FROM OUT OF THE ROUGH AND ONE PUTTING, SO, I SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN MY YOUTH, I WAS TOO LAZY TO PRACTICE (LAUGHS).

Peter Kessler
SO LAZY THAT I THINK AT WINGED FOOT YOU HAD, I MEAN THAT WEEK YOU ONLY HAD NINE ONE PUTTS IN A ROW

Billy Casper
THAT'S RIGHT

Peter Kessler
FROM THE END OF ONE ROUND TO THE FIRST FEW HOLES OF THE NEXT DAY.

Billy Casper
PETER YOU ALWAYS AMAZE ME. YOU KNOW SO MUCH. IT'S, IT'S JUST A PLEASURE TO JUST SIT DOWN AND VISIT WITH YOU AND I THINK YOU'RE TRULY ONE OF THE GREAT, THE GREAT AT WHAT YOU DO. THERE IS. ONE OF THE GREATS.

Peter Kessler
THANK YOU BILLY I APPRECIATE IT.

Billy Casper
IF NOT THE GREATEST. YOU KNOW I WAS TOO LAZY TO HIT SHOTS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. I DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE PRACTICE TEE. I WANTED TO PUTT, CHIP, SPEND A LOT OF TIME CHIPPING AND PUTTING, IN FACT, WE USED TO CADDIE AND WE'D GO HOME AT

NIGHT AFTER WE PLAYED CARDS SO WE COULDN'T SEE THE FACE OF THE CARDS AND WE'D PUTT ON THE 16TH GREEN AND YOU'D WALK UP AND LOOK AND SEE

WHERE THE HOLE WAS AND THEN YOU'D WALK BACK AND YOU'D HAVE A MENTAL IMAGE. YOU WERE APPEALING TO YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS AND THEN YOU'D STEP UP

AND HIT THAT PUTT AND YOU DIDN'T, IT DIDN'T WORRY ABOUT THE BUMPS AND THE SPIKE MARKS OR ANYTHING THAT WAS ON THE GREEN BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T SEE THEM.

Peter Kessler
WELL SURE YOU NEVER WORRY ABOUT THE THINGS THAT YOU CAN'T SEE.

Billy Casper
AND YOU DEVELOPED REALLY A GREAT STROKE AND ONCE IN A WHILE YOU'D HOLE ONE OF THOSE BIG OLD LONG PUTTS IN THE DARK.

Peter Kessler
IN YOUR CASE IT WAS ONCE IN A WHILE YOU'D MISS ONE.

WE'LL BE, WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK IN JUST A SECOND.

Billy Casper
(LAUGHING)

Peter Kessler
I THOUGHT THAT YOU WOULD PARTICULARLY APPRECIATE THIS AT, OF STATISTICS. WANT TO JUST DROOL OVER THOSE ONE MORE TIME?

PGA TOUR WINS '65 THROUGH '70. CASPER, NICKLAUS, PALMER AND PLAYER. YOU CAN SEE WHO HAD THE MOST DURING THE TIME OF WHAT WAS KNOWN AS THE BIG THREE WHICH IS WHY WE'RE NOW CALLING IT THE BIG FOUR.

WERE YOU ACTIVELY AND SECRETLY DISTURBED BY THE LACK OF MEDIA AND FAN ATTENTION TO YOU AND YOUR GAME DURING THE TIME PERIOD THAT YOU WERE BUILDING THE RECORD THAT WE JUST TOOK A LOOK AT, IN THAT GRAPHIC?

Billy Casper
PETER, WE'VE TALKED ABOUT SOMETHING BEFORE IN THIS PROGRAM, YOU KNOW, BEFORE AND THAT'S ABOUT THE FAMILY AND HOW IMPORTANT THE FAMILY WAS TO ME AND IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT.

I SPENT FOUR YEARS IN THE NAVY AND I MADE $54 AND 50 CENTS EVERY TWO WEEKS AND I HAD A 77, 77 DOLLAR LIVING ALLOWANCE. I WORKED, WIFE WORKED IN THE DEPARTMENT STORE. WE LIVED IN A TRAILER. WE HAD OUR FIRST CHILD WHEN

I WAS IN, IN '54 AND I HAD TO TURN PROFESSIONAL BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE TO PAY GREENS FEES IF I WAS NOT PROFESSIONAL WHILE I WAS IN THE NAVY AND, SO THEREFORE THE FAMILY HAS

ALWAYS BEEN THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN MY LIFE AND PLAYING GOLF WAS A MEANS OF MAKING MONEY WHEREBY I COULD TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY AND THAT WAS THE PRIME PURPOSE OF

PLAYING GOLF WAS TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY AND WE HAD THREE CHILDREN AND THEN WE DECIDED WE WANTED MORE CHILDREN AND WE WOUND UP ADOPTING SIX AND THEN AFTER 15 YEARS BEING, MY WIFE BEING TOLD BY THREE DIFFERENT DOCTORS

SHE COULDN'T HAVE CHILDREN AGAIN WE, SHE CONCEIVED AND WE HAD TWO MORE FOR A TOTAL OF ELEVEN, BUT ONE OF THE BIG MISTAKES THAT I MADE IN MY LIFE IS NOT PLAYING IN THE BRITISH OPEN.

I DIDN'T GO OVER UNTIL 1968. TOWARD THE END OF MY CAREER. WE PLAYED AT CARNOUSTIE. I SHOT 72, 68 TO LEAD BY FOUR SHOTS. 74 THE THIRD ROUND TO LEAD BY ONE AND ACTUALLY BE TIED FOR

THE LEAD GOING TO THE 14 HOLE OF THE FINAL ROUND AND THEN GARY PLAYER MADE A WONDERFUL EAGLE ON THAT PAR 5 AND I FINISHED THIRD, OR FOURTH OR FIFTH IN THE, IN THE BRITISH OPEN.

THE BRITISH OPEN WAS, THE COURSES IN THE BRITISH OPEN WERE GOLF COURSES THAT WERE TAILORED FOR MY GAME BECAUSE I WAS A GREAT WIND PLAYER.
I LOVED TO PLAY RUN SHOTS. I KEPT THE

BALL DOWN. EVERYTHING THAT WOULD LEND ITSELF TO BEING SUCCESSFUL IN THE BRITISH OPEN, BUT YOU KNOW I WOULDN'T GIVE UP A WEEK OR TWO TO
GO OVER AND PLAY BECAUSE I HAD IT SO

GOOD IN THE U.S. AND I DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE UP THAT 5000 TO 20,000 THAT I'D WIN THOSE TWO WEEKS.

Peter Kessler
YOU'VE ALWAYS HAD THIS STRONG SENSE OF TRADITIONAL VALUES AND IT SEEMS LIKE, AND YOU MENTIONED SEPTEMBER 11TH A FEW MINUTES AGO, THAT A GREAT NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE RETURNED TO

WHAT WE CHARACTERIZE AS TRADITIONAL VALUES AND THERE'S BEEN ACTIVE HEALING OF INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THIS COUNTRY AND OTHERS. HOW, IN YOUR VIEW, DO WE RETAIN THIS NEW SENSE OF SELFLESSNESS AND KEEP SELF-ISHNESS AT BAY?

Billy Casper
WELL I THINK WE NEED TO GET INVOLVED. WE HAVE TALENT, SKILLS AND ABILITIES THAT ENABLE US TO ASSOCIATE WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND IF WE CAN LIVE A PROPER LIFE AND DO THE PROPER THINGS

WE HAVE A CHANCE OF TOUCHING THE LIVES OF OTHER PEOPLE. THIS IS WHY IN THE LATTER PART OF MY LIFE THAT I'VE PLAYED A LOT OUTSIDE THE U.S. BECAUSE I FELT THAT THE GAME OF GOLF IS A VEHICLE WHERE BY GOOD WILL COULD BE

SPREAD AND, AND I'M SURE OF IT. I'VE SEEN IT IN ACTION MANY, MANY TIMES AND WE SEE IT FROM PLAYERS THAT COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO PLAY IN THE UNITED STATES, WHAT GREAT

AMBASSADORS THEY ARE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND OF THEIR PEOPLE AND IF MAKES YOU WANT TO GO TO THEIR COUNTRY AND PLAY GOLF AND TO GET TO KNOW THEIR PEOPLE, AS I WENT TO MOROCCO BACK IN 1969 FOR MY FIRST

TRIP. BECAME ACQUAINTED WITH THE KING OF MOROCCO. I SAID TO HIM AS WE FINISHED A ROUND OF GOLF, I SAID 'WHAT A GREAT PLEASURE IT IS FOR ME TO BE IN YOUR COUNTRY TO GET TO KNOW YOU. TO PLAY SOME GOLF WITH YOU, BUT

MORE SO TO GET TO KNOW YOUR PEOPLE AND TO SEE YOUR COUNTRY AND WITH THAT HE SENT ME ON A TRIP AROUND HIS COUNTRY IN HIS OWN PRIVATE JET TO GET TO KNOW HIS PEOPLE AND HIS COUNTRY AND THAT RELATIONSHIP GREW, AND

GREW AND GREW. EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T SPEND MUCH TIME TOGETHER WE WERE THE VERY CLOSEST OF FRIENDS AND EVEN THOUGH WE WOULD GO FOR A YEAR OR SO BETWEEN VISITS IT WAS JUST LIKE

WE HADN'T MISSED THE BEAT. IT'S JUST LIKE YOU AND I. WE HAVE SOMETHING THAT IS VERY SPECIAL, BUT WHEN I GET WITH YOU IT'S, IT'S A WONDERFUL FEELING, THAT YOU DON'T RUN ACROSS PEOPLE LIKE THAT OFTEN IN YOUR LIFE

AND I, I, FEEL VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD THE EXPERIENCES THAT I'VE HAD DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS BUT YOU KNOW, WE CAN JUST SIT AND TALK

Peter Kessler
WE WILL BUT

Billy Casper
YOU KNOW

Peter Kessler
WE'LL TAKE A LITTLE BREAK BECAUSE OUR SPONSOR'S GOING TO GET MAD AT ME IF WE DON'T.

Billy Casper
OKAY

Peter Kessler
AND WE

Billy Casper
I'M GETTING TOO EMOTIONAL. (LAUGHS)

Peter Kessler
YOU ALWAYS GET TOO EMOTIONAL. HERE I GOT SOMETHING FOR YOU TO GET EMOTIONAL ABOUT. WAIT TILL YOU SEE THIS PARTICULAR

Billy Casper
OH BOY

Peter Kessler
GRAPHIC THAT WE'VE GOT GOING BACK. NOW YOU'LL LIKE THIS ONE TOO.

Billy Casper
OH BOY

Peter Kessler
WE'VE GOT ALL THE GOOD STUFF FOR YOU, BILLY.

THE BIG FOUR. WE GOT THE PRO MAJORS, VARDON TROPHIES, PLAYER OF THE YEAR. GOT THEM ALPHABETICALLY. CASPER, 3, 5 AND 2 AND YOU CAN SEE THE REST OF THE NUMBERS. PRETTY COMPELLING STUFF, HUH BILLY CASPER?

YOU CAN'T GIVE ME A LONG WINDED ANSWER

Billy Casper
YOU DON'T

Peter Kessler
BECAUSE WE'RE GOING AWAY.

Billy Casper
YOU DON'T... DID I REALLY DO THOSE THINGS? (LAUGHS)

Peter Kessler
YEAH AND WITH A FAMILY, WITH A LARGE FAMILY. A THING THAT YOU CALLED A BURDEN FOR OTHER PEOPLE. SURE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ONE FOR YOU. WE'LL BE BACK.

Peter Kessler
NOW, I KNOW THERE WAS A TIME THAT BEN HOGAN ONCE SAID TO YOU AFTER YOU MISSED 18 GREENS AND SHOT 65 THAT IF YOU COULDN'T PUTT YOU'D BE SELLING HOT DOGS BUT ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER HE SAID TO YOU, COULD YOU GIVE
ME A PUTTING LESSON. COULD YOU SHOW US WHAT YOU SHOWED HIM?

Billy Casper
WELL THAT HAPPENED AT WYKAGYL IN THE OLD ROUND ROBIN TOURNAMENT AND HAWKINS HAD SHOT 67 AND I'D SHOT 68 AND HE SINGLED OUT THE BOTH, BOTH OF US AS WE WERE WALKING TO THE

CLUB HOUSE. HE SAID IF YOU TWO GUYS COULDN'T PUTT, JUST WHAT YOU STATED, I'D BE BUYING HOT DOGS FROM YOU. AND THE NEXT MORNING WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE CLUB HE, IN THE PRO, IN THE LOCKER ROOM HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THERE AND

HE SAID 'BILLY', HE CALLED ME OVER AND I WENT OVER, HE SAYS 'BILLY, HOW DO YOU PUTT?' AND SO THIS IS WHAT I TOLD HIM AND I SAID 'WELL, WHAT I DO IS I HOLD THE CLUB WITH MY LEFT HAND LIKE

THIS AND THEN I PLACE MY RIGHT HAND ON IT AND I PLANT THE FOUR FINGER OF THE LEFT HAND DOWN OVER THE, THE LAST FING... THE LAST THREE FINGERS OF THE RIGHT HAND AND I TRY TO GET MY HEAD OVER THE BALL. MY EYES OVER THE BALL.

THE BALL TWO OR THREE INCHES IN BACK OF MY LEFT HEEL. I TRY TO TAKE THE PUTTER SQUARE BACK.

Peter Kessler
ALMOST HOODED KIND OF A FEEL?

Billy Casper
ALMOST LIKE A HOODED BUT THEN THE BLADE OF THE CLUB IS SQUARE AND THEN I WATCH THE BACK OF THE BALL AND I GIVE IT SORT OF A LITTLE TAP STROKE... AND THERE YOU ARE AND I QUIT.

Peter Kessler
(LAUGHS)

Billy Casper
NOW SEE I'VE GOTTEN OLD ENOUGH. WHEN I MAKE THE FIRST ONE THAT'S IT, I'M NOT GOING TO HIT ANOTHER ONE.

Peter Kessler
NONSENSE. WE'VE GOT

FOUR MORE MINUTES TO GO.

Billy Casper
NO, NO WAY AM I GOING TO HIT ANOTHER ONE.

Peter Kessler
NOW TELL ME, IT ALMOST APPEARS AS THOUGH WHEN YOU PUTT THAT YOUR LEFT HAND IS MERELY HANGING ON AND ALL OF THE ROUTINE AND ACTIVITY IS REALLY TAKING PLACE IN THE RIGHT HAND AND WRIST. IS THAT FAIR?

Billy Casper
WELL

Peter Kessler
LIKE YOU WERE GOING TO HAMMER A TACK INTO THE WALL.

Billy Casper
THAT'S RIGHT, BUT THE LEFT HAND HAS TO KEEP MOVING, TO KEEP THE BLADE OF THE CLUB MOVING SQUARE THROUGH THE STROKE. IF YOU STOP WITH THE LEFT HAND, THE FORCE OF THE RIGHT HAND

WILL BEND YOUR WRIST THIS WAY AND THEN YOU'RE GOING TO PUT A REALLY A FALSE SPIN ON IT.

Peter Kessler
AND THE TOE'S GOING TO PASS THE HEEL.

Billy Casper
RIGHT. THE WHOLE CONCEPT IN PUTTING AND THIS IS THE FAULT THAT I REALLY HAVE IS I GET SO EXCITED ABOUT PUTTING THAT I WANT TO SEE WHERE THE BALL GOES AND HALF THE TIME I'M LOOKING AT

THE HOLE WHEN I MAKE A STRIKE OF THE BALL AND THEN YOU, YOU HAVE NO CHANCE OF MAKING THE PUTT. IF YOU MAKE IT YOU'RE JUST SURE LUCKY, SO, WHAT I TRY TO DO IN EXPLAINING ABOUT

PUTTING IS THAT YOU USE A SMOOTH UNHURRIED STROKE. TRY TO KEEP THE PUTTER LOW AND ALWAYS WATCH THE BACK OF THE BALL, WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO HIT IT.

AND ASK

Peter Kessler

CENTER OF THE BACK OF THE BALL

Billy Casper

RIGHT

Peter Kessler

AS OPPOSED TO THE INSIDE QUADRANT

Billy Casper

RIGHT

Peter Kessler

WHEN WE'RE HITTING A

FULL SHOT.

Billy Casper

RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF IT AND YOU ALWAYS SEE THE BLADE STRIKE THE BACK OF THE BALL. THEN YOU'VE KEPT YOUR HEAD STILL. THEN YOU HAVE GREAT SUCCESS OF MAKING PUTTS.

Peter Kessler

WHAT DO YOU SEE IF ANYTHING IN YOUR MIND'S EYE DURING THE STROKE?

Billy Casper

WELL THAT'S A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL QUESTION BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS WHEN THEY'RE TRYING TO PLAY A GOLF SHOT OR A, A PUTTING, OR A PUTT STROKE. THEY'RE ALL ONE IN THE SAME.

YOU HAVE TO BE BLANK. YOU HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT SOMETHING TO PREPARE YOURSELF TO HIT THAT SHOT AND BY POSITIONING YOURSELF OVER THE BALL, YOU HAVE THE LINE, YOU HAVE EVERYTHING SO NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO

DO IS JUST CONCENTRATE ON SMOOTHNESS AND TEMPO. SAME WAY WITH THE GOLF SWING. TEMPO IS THE KEY TO ALL GOOD GOLF SHOTS. OVER THINKING IS A RESULT OF BAD SHOTS, AND YOU KNOW MANY YEARS I PLAYED ON THE

TOUR WHERE I HAD SOMETHING WITHIN ME THAT I KNEW WASN'T QUITE RIGHT WHEN I GOT TO A SHOT AND THEN I WOULD BACK OFF AND PLAY A VERY CONSERVATIVE SHOT AND ALWAYS THAT RESULTED, PARTICULARLY ON PAR 5'S, I

WOULDN'T GO FOR THE GREEN LIKE MANY OF THE PLAYERS BUT I WOULD LAY UP TO MY STRONGEST POINT WHICH WAS A WEDGE SHOT BETWEEN 85 AND 100 YARDS

AND INVARIABLY IT RESULTED IN BIRDIES AND PARS WITH VERY SELDOM IT WAS A BOGIE.

Peter Kessler

NOW THE OPPOSITE WAS ALSO OCCASIONALLY TRUE BECAUSE ON THE 18TH HOLE OF REGULATION, THE 72ND HOLE AT OLYMPIC IN THE U.S. OPEN WITH ARNOLD, HE DIDN'T HIT THE ONE IRON. SOMETHING TOLD YOU TO HIT THE DRIVER

Billy Casper

YEAH, EXACTLY

Peter Kessler

AND YOU DID RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE.

Billy Casper

RIGHT

Peter Kessler

WHEN WE COME BACK

Billy Casper

RIGHT

Peter Kessler

WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT

ABOUT THAT

Billy Casper

RIGHT

Peter Kessler

DON'T GO AWAY.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT ONE OF THE SUCCESSFUL PUTTS. THERE WERE ONLY A FEW PUTTS FOR BILLY CASPER IN THAT OPEN. AS WE LEAVE YOU.

TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCER (MALE):

GOING AFTER THE RECORD FOR AN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. IN FACT IF HE PARS IN HE WILL BREAK BEN HOGAN'S RECORD BY ONE SHOT. SO IT'S PALMER AGAINST THE RECORD RIGHT NOW.

Peter Kessler

DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT GOT ARNOLD IN TROUBLE THAT INSTEAD OF THINKING ABOUT YOU, THE GUY WHO WAS PLAYING WITH HIM WHO WAS SLOWLY CATCHING UP. HE WAS THINKING

ABOUT THE FELLOW YOU GAVE THAT PUTTING LESSON TO, BEN HOGAN AND THE RECORD THAT BEN HAD SET IN '48.

Billy Casper

THAT'S SO TRUE, PETER. ARNOLD, AS WE WALKED TO THE 10TH TEE, HE DIDN'T EVER FEEL THAT HE WAS NOT GOING TO WIN THE OPEN THAT, THAT YEAR AND I, THE WAY HE WAS PLAYING I KNEW HE AS GOING TO WIN THE OPEN BUT I WANTED TO FINISH SECOND. I WANTED TO FINISH

IN FRONT OF THE LATE TONY LEMA AND JACK NICKLAUS AND, SO AS THINGS STARTED UNFOLDING, ARNOLD STARTED MAKING SOME BOGIES AND HIS MAIN GOAL OF HOGAN'S RECORD WAS SLIPPING AWAY AND THEN THE LITTLE FAT FELLOW
WAS THERE IN HIS HEELS (LAUGHS).

Peter Kessler

NOW, SPEAKING OF THE LITTLE FAT FELLOW AND ARNOLD, IN '87 WHEN THE OPEN RETURNED TO OLYMPIC, TELL ME THAT DELIGHTFUL LITTLE CONVERSATION

THAT YOU HAD WITH ARNOLD WHEN HE WALKED UP TO YOU ABOUT ALL THE QUESTIONS HE WAS BEING ASKED.

Billy Casper

WELL THE MEDIA STARTED, I THINK, IN ABOUT NOVEMBER OF ASKING US QUESTIONS

Peter Kessler

OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR

Billy Casper

OF THE YEAR, OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR THAT WE'D PLAYED THE OPEN THERE IN WHICH I'D CAUGHT UP FROM SEVEN SHOTS BEHIND IN THE LAST NINE HOLES AND THEN WINNING IN THE PLAY OFF AND

ARNOLD SAYS I'M GETTING TIRED OF THE MEDIA ASKING ME ABOUT IT AND I SAID WELL ARNOLD IF IT HADN'T HAD TURNED OUT THE WAY IT DID THEY WOULDN'T BE ASKING YOU THESE QUESTIONS AND LOOK

AT ALL THE PUBLICITY THAT YOU'RE GETTING FROM IT. HE SAID I HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT IT THAT WAY (LAUGHS).

Peter Kessler

YOU HAD A POINT THERE. LET'S GO AHEAD AND TAKE A CALL FROM ONE OF OUR VIEWERS. WE'VE GOT GREG RIGHT HERE IN THE MIDDLE CALLING FROM ONTARIO. HOW ARE YOU GREG?

GREG, CALLER FROM ONTARIO (MALE):

I'M GREAT PETER. HOW ARE YOU?

Peter Kessler

VERY WELL THANK YOU SIR.

Billy Casper

GREG

GREG, CALLER FROM ONTARIO (MALE):

I'VE GOT A TWO PART QUESTION FOR YOU MR. CASPER.

Billy Casper

YES SIR.

GREG, CALLER FROM ONTARIO (MALE):

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS YOUR BIGGEST SINGLE WIN AND IS THERE ONE SHOT THAT REALLY STICKS OUT IN YOUR MIND THROUGH YOUR WHOLE CAREER?

Billy Casper

OH GREG YOU'RE ASKING A VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION. LET ME SAY. THERE ARE FIVE THAT STAND OUT IN MY CAREER. WINNING MY FIRST TOURNAMENT AND THAT HAPPENED JUST NOT TOO FAR FROM

WHERE YOU LIVE. UP IN QUEBEC CITY, CANADA IN 1956. I WON THE, THE TOURNAMENT THAT WAS PLAYED THERE.
I WON'T MENTION THE NAME BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO GIVE A PLUG FOR A COMPANY.

WINNING THE OPEN IN '59 AT WINGED FOOT WHICH WE HAVE, WE HAVE COVERED HERE. WINNING A TOURNAMENT IN WHICH I WAS OFF THE
TOUR FOR THREE MONTHS WITH A INJURY

TO MY HAND. FIRST TOURNAMENT BACK NOT KNOWING WHETHER I'D EVER WIN A TOURNAMENT AGAIN OR EVER BE ABLE TO PLAY 72 HOLES. THAT WAS IN HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT. I WON THAT

TOURNAMENT. THEN WINNING THE OPEN A SECOND TIME IN 1966 WHICH WE HAVE JUST WITNESSED AND THEN WINNING THE MASTERS. MANY OF THE MEDIA SAID THAT I COULD NEVER WIN AT AUGUSTA BECAUSE OF MY CONSERVATIVE PLAY AND IN 1970 I PROVED THEM WRONG

WHICH WAS JUST ONE OF THE GREAT THRILLS OF MY LIFE BUT THOSE FIVE ARE HARD TO PICK WHICH WAS THE GREATEST ONE. THE GREATEST SHOT THAT I HIT WAS A NINE IRON SHOT THAT I HIT IN THE PLAY OFF AGAINST GENE LITTLER WHEN I WON AT AUGUSTA IN 1970.

I HAD HIT A DIVE HOOK OFF OF THE SECOND TEE, HIT A TREE AND BOUNCED DOWN INTO THE ROUGH. IT WAS ACTUALLY A WATER HAZARD BUT BECAUSE OF THE MANY PEOPLE THAT HAD

BEEN THERE, THE GRASS HAD BEEN WALKED DOWN, THE BALL WAS SITUATED ON TOP OF THE GRASS BUT BEHIND IT ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF OR TWO INCHES WAS A, WAS A BRANCH THAT WAS, COVERED ABOUT HALF OF THE BALL AND I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THIS NINE IRON AND

SLIP IT OVER THE BRANCH UNDERNEATH THE BALL, HIT IT UP IN THE AIR VERY QUICK ABOUT 130 YARDS BACK OUT INTO THE FAIRWAY, WENT ON TO SCORE A PAR, PICK UP A STROKE FROM LITTLER ON THAT HOLE AND WENT ON TO WIN THE MASTERS BECAUSE OF THAT SHOT.

Peter Kessler

AND GENE HAD BEEN RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE ON THAT HOLE, LAID HIS SECOND SHOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE GREEN AND

(UNINTELLIGIBLE)

Billy Casper

CHILLY DIPPED IT,

Peter Kessler

YEAH

Billy Casper

INTO THE SAND TRAP.

Peter Kessler

WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK. DON'T GO AWAY.

Peter Kessler

ALRIGHT BILLY, HERE'S A QUESTION SUBMITTED BY CHRIS GOODWIN IN LONDON, ONTARIO. CHRIS SAYS 'YOU HAVE SEEN OR PLAYED WITH ALL OF THE GREATS OF THE LAST 50 YEARS. PLEASE

SHARE WITH US IN ORDER, HOW YOU RANK WITH THE TOP FIVE.

Billy Casper

WELL I WOULD THINK THAT NUMBER ONE WOULD HAVE TO BE JACK NICKLAUS BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS ACCOMPLISHED. I WOULD THINK THAT HOGAN WOULD HAVE TO BE INTO THAT

CATEGORY. I WOULD THINK THAT ARNOLD PALMER WOULD BE IN THAT CATEGORY. SAM SNEAD WOULD BE IN THAT CATEGORY. WHAT'S THAT, FOUR? AND TIGER WOODS IS COMING IN VERY QUICKLY. WOULD BE IN THAT CATEGORY.

ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT PLAYED WITH TIGER WOODS, BUT YOU KNOW, SOMEONE THAT I'M GOING TO KNOCK THE SOCKS OFF OF THIS FELLOW THAT HAS ASKED THIS QUESTION, A FELLOW THAT COULD REALLY HIT THE BALL, AND IF HE HAD THE

RIGHT TEMPERAMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE GREAT PLAYERS TO HAVE ESTABLISHED RECORDS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEYOND BELIEF AND THAT WAS TOMMY BOLT. I PLAYED IN SOUTH AFRICA ABOUT FIVE YEARS AFTER HE WAS

DOWN THERE AND THEY REFERRED TO TOMMY BOLT, EVEN-TEMPERED TOMMY BOLT, ALWAYS MAD (LAUGHS). TOMMY COULD HIT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GOLF SHOTS I HAVE EVER SEEN. HE COULD GET THE BALL FLYING INTO THE GREENS AS

SOFT AS ANY PLAYER THAT I EVER WATCHED HIT A GOLF BALL AND BECAUSE OF HIS CHARACTER MAKE-UP HE KEPT HIMSELF AWAY FROM GREATNESS, I THINK. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SUCH A

GREAT CHARACTER. AH, THERE SOME WONDERFUL STORIES ABOUT TOMMY. IT'S HARD TO TELL THEM HERE ON TELEVISION BUT THEY ARE SOME UNBELIEVABLE STORIES. HE'S ONE OF MY GREAT FRIENDS.

I WOULD PUT HIM, YOU KNOW, RIGHT AT SIX, SEVEN WITH GARY PLAYER. GARY PLAYER HAS PROBABLY GOT THE MOST, THE MOST OUT OF THE GAME THAT ANY SMALL MAN, OTHER THAN GENE SARAZAN.

SARAZAN, WHAT A GREAT ASSET HE WAS TO THIS GAME OF GOLF AND WHAT A GREAT LOSS IT WAS TO ALL OF US THAT WERE HIS FRIENDS WHEN HE PASSED AWAY, AS WAS HOGAN. BEN HOGAN WAS A UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL. HE SELECTED HIS FRIENDS AND FORTUNATELY I WAS ONE OF HIS FRIENDS. THAT WAS A GREAT LOSS.

Peter Kessler

TOMMY ALWAYS TALKS ABOUT ARNOLD HAVING TWO PAIR OF HANDS WHEN ARNOLD FIRST CAME OUT ON TOUR. ONE AT THE CLEANERS AND ONE ON AND OF COURSE HE WON THE OPEN THE YEAR

BEFORE YOU DID IN 1958 AT SOUTHERN HILLS AND ABOUT 15 OTHER TOURNAMENTS. IS IT NOT INEXPLICABLE THAT HE IS NOT YET IN THE WORLD GOLF HALL OF FAME IN YOUR VIEW?

Billy Casper

YES, I THINK HE DESERVES IT. YOU KNOW HE WAS A, HE AND JIMMY DEMARETT REALLY BROUGHT COLOR INTO THE GAME OF GOLF IN THEIR ATTIRE. SANDERS CAME

ON A LITTLE LATER, BUT, YOU MENTIONED SOUTHERN HILLS. HE WON IN '58 WE WERE PLAYING A WEEK OR SO LATER, GRAND BLANC, MICHIGAN IN A BUICK OPEN AND HE SHOT 71 THE FIRST ROUND.

I THINK HE FOLLOWED IT WITH 73 AND I WALKED INTO THE PRESS ROOM. I HAD SHOT 72, 72. I WAS LEADING THE TOURNAMENT. HE WAS JUST COMPLETING HIS, HIS PRESS CONFERENCE AND HE SINGLED OUT THE WRITER OF THE

DETROIT FREE PRESS AND HE SAID TO HIM, HE SAID, I THINK IT WAS JOHN, AND I FORGET WHAT HIS LAST NAME WS, HE SAID 'JOHN, I'M 39, NOT 49 LIKE YOU HAD IN THE PAPER' AND JOHN SAYS 'WELL TOM,

HE SAYS THAT WAS A TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR' AND HE SAYS 'TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR MY' IT WAS A PERFECT FOUR AND A PERFECT NINE. (LAUGHS)

Peter Kessler

AND THE GREAT THING WAS, SECRETLY HE WAS 42 AT THE TIME. HE DID THE HOLLYWOOD LIE ABOUT

YOUR AGE FOR TWO YEARS

Billy Casper

YEAH, YEAH LIKE SOME OF THE OTHER GUYS. GOLBY, GOLBY WAS ALWAYS SO, SO MANY, HE SAID ALL OF A SUDDEN HE WAS 50.

(PETER AND BILLY LAUGH)

Peter Kessler

IT'S NICE TO KEEP HAVING THE SAME BIRTHDAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND MY PRODUCER'S DONE THAT SIX YEARS IN A ROW. WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

Billy Casper

OHHH

Peter Kessler

OH, WHAT DOES THIS PICTURE MEAN TO YOU?

Billy Casper

THAT SITS IN MY FRONT ROOM. THEN TO HAVE GENE SARAZEN THERE ON THE, ON OUR RIGHT AS WE'RE LOOKING AT IT, BEN HOGAN. MY HAND ON HIS SHOULDER AND MY HAND ON SAM SNEAD'S SHOULDER.

(MUSIC)

YOU COULD PAY A LOT OF MONEY AND IT NEVER WOULD BE ENOUGH TO HAVE THE MEMORIES AND THE FEELINGS THAT I'VE HAD WITH THOSE GENTLEMEN.

Peter Kessler

PEOPLE SAY THAT YOU ARE THE NICEST GUY AND YOU ARE, BUT THIS YEAR YOU ACTUALLY GOT THE, AN AWARD FOR BEING MR. NICE GUY OF THE YEAR. TELL ME ABOUT THAT.

Billy Casper

WELL, WE HAVE A GROUP OF GENTLEMEN IN THE SAN DIEGO AREA. I BELIEVE IT WAS IN 1979. THERE WERE FIVE OR SIX OF THEM HAVING LUNCH AND THEY HEARD OF A FAMILY WHO WAS DOWN AND OUT AND THEY SAID WELL LET'S EACH THROW IN A

HUNDRED OR TWO AND GIVE IT TO THEM, HELP THEM OUT AND THAT STARTED THE NICE GUYS IN SAN DIEGO. IT'S NOW INCREASED TO ABOUT 150 MEMBERS AND THEY RAISED FUNDS THROUGH GOLF TOURNAMENT, THROUGH THIS DINNER IN WHICH THEY HONOR AN INDIVIDUAL AND

THEY HAVE SEVERAL OTHER FUNCTIONS IN WHICH THEY RAISE FUNDS AND THEY JUST TAKE CARE OF NEEDY PEOPLE IN OUR AREA AND THEY'RE CALLED THE NICE GUYS AND IT WAS A GREAT HONOR TO

RECEIVE THAT, THAT AWARD AND I TOLD THEM, I SAID I FEEL SO TOUCHED BY IT, TO BE INCLUDED THAT I'D LIKE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE ORGANIZATION, SO I WILL BECOME A MEMBER OF THE NICE GUYS.

Peter Kessler

YOU'RE ALSO

Billy Casper

EVEN THOUGH I RECEIVED THE AWARD. YES.

Peter Kessler

YOU'RE ALSO A MEMBER OF THE WORLD CUP HALL OF FAME. NOT JUST FOR THE FIVE TOURNAMENTS YOU MENTIONED. NOT FOR THE SHOT AGAINST GENE LITTLER, BUT FOR REALLY A HALF A

CENTURY OF WHAT YOU'VE DONE ON THE GOLF COURSE IGNORING FOR A MOMENT YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS OFF IT. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?

Billy Casper

WELL, IT'S SOMETHING TO BE HONORED BY THE MEDIA AND YOUR FELLOW PLAYERS AND TO BE ABLE TO STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THESE GREAT PLAYERS DOWN, THAT HAVE

ESTABLISHED SO MUCH IN THE GAME OF GOLF THAT HAVE BROUGHT SO MUCH ENJOYMENT TO PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. WHAT A GREAT GAME IT IS. I MEAN YOU COULD SPEND FOUR HOURS

WITH A FELLOW PLAYING GOLF AND YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT HIM IN THAT FOUR HOURS THAN DEALING WITH THAT PERSON FOR MONTHS OVER A DESK.

Peter Kessler

EVERY TIME I SIT WITH YOU FOR AN HOUR I LEARN MORE THAN YOU COULD

Billy Casper

HEY, YOU'RE JUST THE GREATEST AND WE'VE GOT TO DO THIS AGAIN ONE OF THESE DAYS.

Peter Kessler

YEAH, LIKE SOON.

Billy Casper

YES.

Peter Kessler

I LOOK FORWARD TO THE PLEASURE.

Billy Casper

OKAY PETER.

Peter Kessler

THANKS BILLY.

Billy Casper

THANK YOU.

Peter Kessler

GREAT BEING WITH YOU.

Billy Casper

GREAT TO BE WITH YOU.

Peter Kessler

GOOD TO BE WITH YOU. GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY.
