Haas Ready to Win at Hickory

RSS

2006 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock BarnMaybe Jay Haas can get back on the championship train when the Champions Tour plays this week at Conover, N.C. Haas won three consecutive times in April and May and hasnt been able to prevail again.

However, Haas has come close his last two tournaments with second-place ties. And this is an event, the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn, that he won last year. He stands second on the Champions Tour money list with less than $100,000 than the leader, Loren Roberts.

Haas has slowly, yet surely, convinced himself that at age 52 the senior circuit is where he needs to be. He still occasionally tees it up on the PGA TOUR and actually made the cut in five of seven attempts on the junior tour this year ' including a tie for 37th at the U.S. Open. But those days are rapidly coming to an end.

Just looking at the Ryder Cup list here wishing I was on it, he said a couple of weeks ago, and wishing I had a chance and all that stuff.

But I guess I have moved on. I feel like I've turned the page now. I'm a Champion's Tour player.

Haas week-in and week-out is certainly near the top of Champions Tour players. His pinpoint iron play and his steady putting have sustained him all year. He stands sixth among the Champions putters and is third in greens hit in regulation. And, he leads the tour in birdies.

But its wins he really wants.

I guess my goal of leading the money list or winning the Charles Schwab Cup championship and points list kind of goes hand-in-hand with winning tournaments out here and contending each week and things like that, he said.

I know how difficult it is to win any golf tournament, to peak at the right times, to be able to all of a sudden call your best game forward and just say, OK, now I'm going to start really playing. I have never been able to do that.
