Hamilton Captures Japan Match Play Title


Japanese TourTOMAKOMAI, Japan (AP) -- Todd Hamilton of the United States defeated David Smail of New Zealand on Sunday to win the $670,000 Japan PGA Matchplay Championship.
Hamilton, the leading money winner on the Japanese tour this season, won 3-and-2 over 36 holes at the Nidom Classic course in Hokkaido.
In the third-place match, Japan's Tetsuji Hiratsuka defeated compatriot Hirofumi Miyase 1-up after 22 holes.
Hamilton earned $250,000 for his fourth victory on this season's Japanese tour. The players in the field were selected on the basis of money rankings.
