Harris and his wife, Jennifer, had spent the day Thursday sight-seeing and visiting Ground Zero, location of the World Trade Center buildings which were destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks. He was preparing to return to Long Island by train when the blackout occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
They began their journey by walking from Lower Manhattan to the Midtown Tunnel, where they caught a ride into Queens. After five more rides along the Long Island Expressway got them as far as New Hyde Park, they telephoned a courtesy car to take them the rest of the way to their hotel in Uniondale. By now the time was 9 p.m.
My experience was fantastic, Harris told Newsday newspaper. People were fantastic. Everyone was cooperating with everyone else. Everyone was courteous. They were absolutely fantastic.
