Holtz said he was 'honored and flattered' as well as surprised to be invited. He has played the prestigous course, which annually hosts the Masters Tournament, on several occassions.
Sports Illustrated reported about Holtz' membership in this week's issue.
The 69-year-old club has come under scrutiny recently over the fact that it doesn't have any female members.
Holtz is the current coach at the University of South Carolina, a state to which Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson has many ties.
He was chairman of the committee that helped desegregate South Carolina's state university system. He also hosted the University of South Carolina's women's golf team at the club a few weeks after this year's Masters.
