Irwin Back to Defend at Brunos Memorial

Hale Irwin hit blackjack at last years Brunos Memorial Classic. The three-time U.S. Open champion shot three straight rounds of 7-under 65 to shatter the tournament scoring record at the Greystone Golf Club near Birmingham, Ala.
Irwins 21-under-par 195 total was six shots better than the previous mark set by Jim Dent in 1994 and matched by Graham Marsh in 95.
It just came together this week, Irwin said after winning his 31st career Senior Tour event. I played extremely well.
With another win later in the 2001 season, and two more triumphs this year, Irwin has upped his record Senior victory total to 34.
History says it will be difficult to make this week No. 35, as no one has ever successfully defended his title in the 10-year playing of this event.
This years purse is $1.4 million, with $210,000 going to the winner. The field includes Tradition champion Jim Thorpe, Ben Crenshaw, Allen Doyle, Bruce Fleisher, Tom Kite, Bruce Lietzke, Gil Morgan, Larry Nelson, Doug Tewell, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Fuzzy Zoeller.
Dont expect a playoff. Only twice has an extra session been needed. John Jacobs defeated Morgan in sudden death in 2000. John Bland bested John Paul Cain and Kermit Zarley in 1996.
