Irwin Jack Arnie and Lee in Skins Game

RSS

Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino will comprise the four-man field in the ConAgra Foods Champions Skins Game.

Irwin won last years edition with 11 skins for a record $450,000. Nicklaus finished second with seven skins for $150,000. Palmer and Fuzzy Zoeller were both shutout.

Irwins winning total bettered the money mark set by Raymond Floyd in 1995 of $420,000. It was Irwins second straight Skins title, and third in the last four years.

Palmer will be playing in his 15th Champions Skins Game. He didn't play in 1997 because of prostate cancer. He won the Champions Skins Game three times in the 1990s, most recently in 93. Palmer is third on the Champions Skins Game money list with $1,065,000, third in skins won with 40 and fifth on the combined Skins/Champions Skins earnings list with $1,310,000.

Nicklaus will be playing in the Champions Skins Game for the 13th time. The winner of the 1991 event, he is No. 2 on the Champions Skins Game career money list ($1,445,000) and No. 2 on the combined Skins/Champions Skins money list with $2,095,000.

Trevino hit one of his most dramatic shots in a skins-format at PGA West in 1987. He used a 6-iron at the 167-yard 17th hole, and the ball took one bounce and disappeared into the cup for a hole-in-one that netted him $175,000. He also had a hole-in-one during a skins-format event in Michigan in 2001.

The $600,000 total purse is broken down to $20,000 for each of the first six holes, $30,000 for each of the middle six holes, $40,000 each for holes 13 through 17, and $100,000 for the 18th hole. The players will donate 20 percent of their winnings to the charity of their choice.

If a hole is not won, the money is carried over. A skin won does not need to be validated on the next hole.

For Irwin, last years victory was just the start to a stellar season. At the age of 57, he won four official events en route to capturing the money title, scoring title and the Champions Tour Player of the Year award.

This will be the third straight year that the 18-hole unofficial event will be contested on the Gold Course at Wailea Golf Club in Maui, Hawaii.

Irwin has dominated the Aloha State in his Champions career. He has nine wins on the islands, including the 2002 Turtle Bay Championships on Oahu.

For golf fans, this may be one of just a handful of occasions to see Palmer and Nicklaus compete.

Palmer played in eight Champions Tour events last year, while lingering back problems limited Nicklaus to just two.

Trevino played in 17 events in 2002, earning one top-10.
