But there are certain tournaments where his winning ways appear chronic in nature.
On the current tour rotation, there are five events he has won twice; three events he has won three times; and one event (Turtle Bay Championship) he has won on four occasions.
In that group of three is the 3M Championship. Irwin won in 1997 when it was known as the Burnet Senior Classic, again in 1999 when it was called the Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic, and last year under its current title.
Irwin finished three shots ahead of Hubert Green to garner 3M trophy No. 3. But his main opponent that Sunday in Blaine, Minn., was James Mason.
Mason and Irwin were tied through six holes in the final round. Mason then made three bogeys over his next seven holes, while Irwin notched a couple of birdies during that stretch.
This is the 11th playing of the event, and the third consecutive time it has been contested at the par-72 TPC of the Twin Cities.
Irwin is the only multiple champion; though, no one has ever repeated.
