Kuramoto scorched the Ishioka Golf Club course by carding 12 birdies and no bogeys. The course is 7,046 yards. Kuramoto is 48 and is trying for the 29th victory of his career.
'I was aware of the record and became nervous from around the eighth hole,' said Kuramoto, who teed off on the back nine of the par-71 course in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo.
'I was thinking about sinking one birdie at a time, and every one of them has become memorable one for me.
He broke the Japanese tour record of 60 set by Noboru Fujiike, set on the first day of the Mitsubishi Galant tournament in 1998.
