The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team staked a four-shot lead after the first round in the Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State and USC at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.
The Bruins posted an opening day score of 289, 5-over par and lead top-ranked Duke by four shots. Pepperdine is third at 296 (+12) followed by Washington and Oklahoma State at 297 (+13).
All-Americans Susie Mathews and Hannah Jun fired rounds of 70 (-1) and 71 (E), respectively, to lead UCLA. Mathews is tied for second with teammate Melissa Martin, who is playing as an individual. Jun is fourth, one stroke ahead of two players who shot 72 (+1). Freshman Amie Cochran, who played the front nine in 3-under par 32, triple bogeyed the 18th hole for a 74 (+3) and is tied for 10th with teammate Charlotte Mayorkas. Freshman Vanessa Brockett is tied for 41st after posting a score of 77 (+6).
Duke's Brittany Lang fired a 3-under par 68 and held the lead after 18 holes.
