HENDERSON, Nev. -- Proving to be one of the elite teams in the country, the sixth-ranked New Mexico women's golf team claimed its third tournament title of the fall season by winning the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown by 18 strokes Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 12) at the Anthem Country Club. The Lobos shot a 5-over 869 (288-288-293) in the three-day tournament.
Senior Katrina Leckovic took home medalist honors for UNM with a 3-under 213 (69-72-72) for the tournament, marking her second career individual championship. The Lobos, who repeated as champions of the Vegas Showdown, have now won three tournament titles in three consecutive seasons.
Junior Shannon Johnson equaled her best round of the season on Wednesday with a 2-under 70, jumping five spots to tie for third in the tournament (72-74-70-216). The third place finish for Johnson is the highest of her career.
Johnson wasn't the only Lobo to record a season-high finish, as sophomore Christine Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) tied for eighth with a 4-over 220 (74-70-76). Fernandez's previous best finish this fall was 15th at the Landfall Tradition.
Freshman Ashley Rollins, who led the Mountain West in scoring average heading into the tournament, placed 12th with a 5-over 221 (73-73-75). Rollins wrapped up a very successful fall, placing in the top 15 for the fourth time in five tournaments.
Junior Kailin Downs finished 28th for the Lobos with a 12-over 228 (78-73-77).
Three Lobos competed as individuals in the tournament: junior Christina Spence (T52nd, 74-85-77-236); senior Kellyn Newman (T71st, 83-79-83-245); and sophomore Kelli Van Winkle (T80th, 86-82-86-254).
The Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown is the last tournament for the Lobos in the fall season. UNM won three of its five tournaments in the fall and placed fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate and ninth at the NCAA Preview. The spring season begins Feb. 9-11 at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
