Lopez Fails in Bid to Qualify for US Open

Nancy Lopez won't be playing in this year's U.S. Women's Open. The LPGA Hall of Famer shot a six-over-par 78 Tuesday in a sectional qualifying event in Duluth, Ga., falling four strokes short of her goal.
The top-14 players out of a field of 111 earned spots in the Open, which begins at the end of May at Southern Pines in North Carolina.
Lopez was forced to try to qualify after the USGA did not give her an exemption to play in the event. Only past champion Liselotte Neumann received an invitation to the event.
The U.S. Open is the only LPGA major that Lopez has failed to win. The 44 year-old has won 48 times in her career, her last win coming at the 1997 Chick-fil-A Charity Championship.
