Love Dealing With Tragedy

Davis Love III will spend time with friends and family, and try to focus on golf to take his mind off a recent tragic event.

Love addressed the media Wednesday for the first time since discovering the body of his brother-in-law, Jeffrey Knight, who had committed suicide in a hunting cabin 25 miles from Loves home in Sea Island, Ga.

Knight killed himself days after admitting to both Love and the FBI that he had stolen in the neighborhood of $1 million from the worlds No. 3-ranked player.

'It is just time to reorganize both personal and business and move on, and this is part of it to come out here and play,' said Love, who is playing in this week's FBR Capital Open at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel in Potomac, Md.

'Obviously, it is an unfortunate tragedy,' he said. 'There are a lot of people saying 'Well, it is too bad in the midst of your golf, your great year,' but it has nothing to do with golf.

'We have lost a very important person in our family, not only to my family but the whole family. He kept the whole family together. He was an important person to us. We are dealing with that fact. Not only did we lose a friend and a family member, but an important part of our family business.'

Knight was married to the sister of Love's wife, Robin. He handled a variety of business affairs for Love but was not involved in his golf course design company.

'Pretty much everything else in my business life, he was either in charge of or actively involved in so it is obviously not only the family but the organization of our family that is topsy-turvy right now,' Love said. 'He was a good friend and a good manager. My friends have been saying everything was running really well in my life.'

Love is in the middle of his most successful season on tour. He has three victories thus far, including The Players Championship. He currently leads the money list with more than $3.7 million, and is among the favorites to win next week's U.S. Open. This is his first event since discovering the body on May 16.

'I'm obviously excited to be back here,' Love said. 'I haven't played here in a long time. There is a new sponsor and a new excitement about the tournament, except for the rain, but it is kind of a new beginning for this tournament and kind of a new start for me to the year so I am excited to be here.'
