Major Competition at Players Championship

Its perhaps the most difficult tournament in the world to win. The fields, according the Official Golf World Rankings, are almost always the toughest in golf. But when it comes to enjoyment, nothing can match the pure pleasure of competing in the Players Championship.
That, said Tiger Woods, makes this tournament special.

You play against the best players on this golf course under these type of conditions, said Woods. This is one heck of a test, so it's a bunch of fun for all of us.
Of course, an enjoyable tournament has to be more than fun. But The Players has so much more going for it.

Fred Funk celebrates his tournament-winning par putt on the 18th green.
The history of the place and the drama that's gone on here and the strength of the field, the golf course, everything about this, makes this tournament stand out, said Adam Scott, who won in 2004. And I think all the players know that and they call it the fifth major It's a big deal to all of us.
I think everybody wants to win this tournament, chimed in Retief Goosen. It's like a major.
Its one course that favors neither the long hitters nor the short hitters. If you look at the guys that have won that tournament - or the guys that have played well in that tournament year in and year out - you look at the top 20 guys or 25 guys, and it's sprinkled with long hitters, short hitters, medium hitters, different types of games, said defending champion Fred Funk. I think that's a testament to how good a golf course it is when you have a mixture of type of games that are filling out the top of the leaderboard.
The look of the place, says Ernie Els, is one of the things that sets it apart. They've got some of the best holes out here that we get on tour, the prettiest holes and some of the toughest ones. All in all, this is the ultimate in stadium golf.
Vijay Singh, who has a home close by, wrapped it up when he added his praise for the course.
Pete Dye did a great job here, said Singh, It's a totally stadium-designed golf course, of all the TPC golf courses. It's totally great viewing. You don't need bleachers all around the golf course to watch golf. You just go around the mounds, and it's a great arena to watch golf. I hope they build more golf courses like this.
