Nelson Becomes Third Richest Event on PGA Tour


The Verizon Byron Nelson Classic has raised its total purse to $4.8 million, making it the third most lucrative event on the 2002 PGA Tour schedule.
Approximately $300,000 was added to last years prize money, with the winner scheduled to collect $864,000.
The event falls behind The Players Championship ($6 million) and the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas ($5 million) as the richest on tour. It has increased winnings every year since 1994, and money has more than tripled since 96.
