Nelson Looks for Familiar Surroundings and First Win

RSS

Larry Nelson, who last year became the fifth player in this tournaments history to successfully defend his title, looks to make it a three-peat at the 2002 FleetBoston Classic.

Though Nelson led the senior tour in wins last year with five and ranks 13th on the all-time list, he has yet to break into the winners circle in 2002.

But maybe with the help of being back in the familiar surroundings at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Mass., it will inspire Nelson to get back to victory lane. It was at last year's FleetBoston that Nelson would become a fan of the bird.

After a late charge by Tom Kite which pulled him to within one of Nelsons lead, Nelson got a bizarre break. Kites tee shot on the par-3 17th struck and killed a purple martin in flight, dropping Kites ball into a pond. The subsequent five on the hole dropped Kite out of contention and gave the title to Nelson.

Six players in Senior Tour history have pulled off the feat of three consecutive titles in a single event, the last by Bruce Fleisher in the 2001 Home Depot Invitational. Fleisher finished second behind Nelson in last year's FleetBoston.

This years tournament has a $1,400,000 purse, with $210,000 going to the winner.
