SUNRIVER, Ore. -- The No. 5 University of New Mexico men's golf team won their third consecutive MWC Championship and a spot in a NCAA Regional, on Saturday. UNM shot a final round 2-under par 286 on the par-72, 7,568 yard Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore, and finished at 8-under par (285-285-286=856) for the tournament. The Lobos edged No. 4 UNLV by three strokes as the Rebels shot a blistering 10-under par 278 in the final round to finish at 5-under par for the tournament.
Junior Spencer Levin led the way for the Lobos but could not hold on to the individual lead. Levin fell one stroke short of Nick Becker of BYU who shot the best round of the tournament today with a 4-under par 68 to finish at 8-under par and win medalist honors. Levin shot a final round 2-under par 70 and finished at 7-under par (69-70-70=209) in second.
Other Lobo results were junior Jay Choi finished tied for fifth at 2-under par (70-74-70=214), sophomore Charlie Beljan tied for seventh at 1-under par (74-69-72=215), senior Madalitso Muthiya tied for 12th at 3-over par and senior Miguel Griego tied for 28th at 11-over par.
The Lobos will now wait for the NCAA Regional selection process to find out where they will play. The NCAA Regionals are May 19-21.
