New Start New Tournament For Seniors

The SAS Championship (pronounced sass) makes its debut this week on the Senior PGA Tour.
The inaugural event will be contested at the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C.
This was supposed to be the second straight stop for the 50-and-over circuit in North Carolina, but last weeks Vantage Championship (Clemmons) was canceled due to the terrorist attacks on September 11 in New York and Washington, D.C.
This is the third first-time tournament to be played on the Senior Tour in 2001. Hale Irwin won the Siebel Classic in March and Jim Thorpe won the Allianz Championship two weeks ago.
The usual suspects are scheduled to compete ' Irwin, Tom Kite, Allen Doyle, Bruce Lietzke, Gil Morgan, Larry Nelson and Doug Tewell. But so too is Mark McCumber.
McCumber, a 10-time PGA Tour winner, makes his first Senior start this week.
The purse is $1.6 million, with $240,000 going to the winner.
