College CentralKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Oklahoma States eighth-ranked Cowgirl Golf team is tied for the team lead with the Swedish Junior National team after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Womens Collegiate Championship here Sunday afternoon at the Fox Den Country Club. OSU and the Swedish Jr. Nationals both carded a 3-over-par 291.
The Cowgirls have a pair of golfers tied for second place individually. Junior Jenny Karr and freshman Ashley Knoll each recorded a 1-under 71s on the day. Another Cowgirl, freshman Mallory Underwood, finished at even par during the first round.
Karr was 2-over after four holes, but shot even par over the next eight holes before hitting back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to return to even. She finished with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.
Knoll did the exact opposite, with the same result. After carding birdies on holes four and seven, she entered the back nine at 2-under. However, she bogeyed holes 10 and 15 to balance out at even before birdying the final hole.
The tournament will continue on Monday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Tuesday with a final round of 18.
