Open Dress Rehearsal

The final tune up for the 132nd Open Championship takes place this week with the playing of the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond on the west coast of Scotland.

A stellar field is set to tee it up on what most people believe is one of the most spectacular courses in the world. The Tom Weiskopf-designed course is breathtaking in it's views and challenging in it's set up.

Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke head the list of European Tour players that will be trying to supplant Eduardo Romero as champion. The 48-year-old Romero beat Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson in a playoff last year, becoming the third oldest winner ever on the European Tour.

Also on hand will be three of America's most popular players in Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and John Daly. Tiger Woods, winner of the PGA Tour's Western Open last week, will not be in the field, as he rarely plays in a tournament the week before a major.

Montgomerie, long a favorite on the European Tour, will have even more than his usual support as he heads home to play in this event, having taken the title in 1999. The seven-time European Order of Merit winner, has seen his game turn around over the last month, after a couple of missed cuts back in early June.

I am very much looking forward to returning to Loch Lomond for The Barclays Scottish Open. I always enjoy playing in Scotland and playing in front of my home crowd.

Rounding out the strong field are Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Thomas Bjorn, who won the event in 1996, the first year it was played at Loch Lomond.

Els, who starting the season on fire by winning four of the first five events he entered, hopes another title at Loch Lomond will put him in the right mindset as he heads into the Open Championship to defend his crown and retain the Claret Jug.

Players will be vying for the $603,443 first place check from the $3,500,645 purse.
