College CentralWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Oklahoma States mens golf team carded a 1-under-par team score of 287 on Thursday to stand alone in first place at the NCAA Central Regional being contested on Purdues Kampen Course.

The top-seeded Cowboys were the only team to break par on the day and finished five shots clear of second-place Texas A&M at the par-72, 7,259-yard Pete Dye layout.

'Anything around par is excellent, and Im very pleased to be 1 under. I didnt expect anyone to be under today, but if somebody was, Im glad it was us, Cowboy head coach Mike Holder said. Its an excellent golf course, its playing pretty tough, which is the way it should be because this is a championship event.'

Individually, OSU was led by freshman Casey Wittenberg, who fired a 3-under 69 to end the day tied atop the leaderboard with Texas Jason Hartwick and the Aggies Andrew Parr. The Memphis, Tenn., native got to 3 under through 10 holes and rebounded from consecutive bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13 with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to break 70 for the fifth time this season.

'It's the first day and you just want to get your feet underneath you. Wittenberg said. I think I got off to a pretty good start and am happy with the score today. If I continue to focus on what I'm doing this week and keep the ball in front of me, and not let it get too far away from me, I'll be OK.'

Junior Alex Norn continued his solid play, breaking par for the fourth time in his last seven rounds with a 2-under round of 70. The Stockholm, Sweden, native will begin his second round tied for fourth place.

Freshman Tyler Leon bounced back from three bogeys on his front nine to come in with a 73 and tied for 17th place, while sophomore Chris Clarke played his inward nine at even par to finish with a 75 and tied for 34th.

Sophomore Zack Robinson rounded out the Cowboy lineup with a 4-over 76 , tying him for 45th place.

OSU will be paired in the second round with Texas and TCU and begin play at 7:12 a.m. (CT) on the No. 10 tee.
