Paying the Tolles

Tommy Tolles seems to have put his recent struggles behind him at this week's PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament finals in La Quinta, Calf. Tolles, who finished 180th on the 2000 money list, shot a second-round 7-under-par 65 to grab the 36-hole lead in the six-round event.
At 16-under-par, Tolles leads Perry Moss by one shot. Moss moved from 16th to second place courtesy of a 10-under-par 62 on the Private Course. Moss played conditionally on the 2000 PGA Tour by finishing 149th on the '99 money list. However, the 31-year-old Louisianan missed 14 of 21 cuts this season to end the year 191st in earnings.
In 1996 and '97, Tolles finished inside the top 30 on the money list, earning over $800,000 each year. In the three seasons that have followed, Tolles has barely made $800,000 combined.
'I haven't been able to find that guy,' said Tolles of his play in '96 and '97. 'If I could have found that guy I wouldn't have been here.'
Craig Barlow and Rocky Walcher are tied for third at 13-under. Both men shot 65s in the second round on the Tournament Course. First-round leader Todd Barranger slipped into a tie for fifth after carding a 2-under-par 70, also on the Tournament Course.
There are 169 players competing for their 2001 PGA Tour cards this week. The top 35 and ties following the completion of play on Monday will receive full playing privileges for next season.
Casey Martin made a strong move to keep his Tour card. Martin vaulted from a tie for 88th place into a tie for 39th place thanks to a 5-under-par 67.
