PGA Tours Last Stop Before Houston

RSS

The Buick Challenge in Pine Mountain, Ga., is the PGA Tours last stop before the $5 million Tour Championship.

Its the final chance for players to climb into the top-30 on the money list and earn a trip to the Champions Club in Houston, Tx.

David Duval is the defending champion. He made a surprising and successful return to action following a 10-week layoff due to an ailing back.

Duval, who had missed the PGA Championship and the WGC-NEC Invitational, was two off the lead with three holes to play Sunday at Callaway Gardens Resort.

He then stuck wedge shots to two feet on No. 17 and to four feet on No. 18 to best Jeff Maggert and Nick Price by two shots. Maggert led from nearly start to finish, but bogeyed 16 and 17. Price also bogeyed the 17th.

This is a spectacular week for me,' Duval said following his victory. 'Everything that happened this year on the golf course, then to follow it up that disappointment with the injury, then to come back and do thisit's an absolute dream.Duval returns as not just the defending champion, but also the reigning British Open champion.

Hes just one of the top-name players scheduled to compete. The list includes eight of the top 12 players on the 2001 money list.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson wont be in attendance, but Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and Stewart Cink will; all three are still seeking their first victories of the season.

Nos. 25-43 on the money list are in the field, with the exception of Steve Stricker, who resides in the precarious 29th position.

Jesper Parnevik is 31st in earnings; $677 behind No. 30, Kenny Perry.

Parnevik tied for 6th in last weeks National Car Rental Golf Classic, though he bogeyed the 72nd hole; a mistake that cost him roughly $30,000.

Disney winner Jose Coceres moved to 33rd on the money list thanks to his second victory of the season. Hell be trying to make up the $59,470 difference between he and Perry.

Nos. 122-136 in earnings are also in the field, not including Fred Couples (126) and Dan Forsman (134).

Couples need not worry about his place on the money list. He is exempt on the PGA Tour until 2006, thanks to his 1996 Players Championship victory.

For those that dont qualify for the Tour Championship, the Southern Farm Bureau Classic will be held simultaneously in Madison, MS.
