Plane Carrying LPGA Players Heavily Loaded

A plane from Portland, Ore., carrying 129 LPGA players and other officials was so loaded that it had to stop and refuel in Texas en route to this week's tournament in North Augusta, S.C.
Safeway Classic officials contributed $50,000 for the flight, with the balance made up by those flying. The plane carried more than 70 golf bags and took more than seven hours to make the trip. The Portland tournament was canceled.
'It barely took off,' said Janice Moodie. 'You could tell on the plane that it was really overloaded.'
Many of the caddies have driven cross-country from Oregon to Augusta. Moodie's caddie, Johnny Scott of Scotland, was diverted for five days last week to Nova Scotia along with his fellow passengers from London during the emergency.
