Pooleys Start Delayed Until April

Don Pooley is recovering from shoulder surgery and will not play his opening tournament of 2003 until April.

Pooley, who won the U.S. Senior Open in 2002 in a playoff with Tom Watson, underwent surgery Jan. 3 to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder. He originally sustained the injury in May of last year, but decided then to rehab the shoulder while continuing his playing schedule. Dr. Champ Baker of the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga., performed the surgery.
'I should be as good as new in April, but I'm really disappointed,' Pooley said. 'I was really looking forward to starting the year in Hawaii at the MasterCard Championship .'
The shoulder is the latest in a string of injuries that has plagued Pooley since the early 1990s. He underwent surgery for a ruptured disc in his neck in 1992 and had lower back surgery in 1993.
