Prime Minister Backs English Ryder Cup Bid


Prime Minister Tony Blair will back a late $35 million bid to wrest the 2009 Ryder Cup away from Scotland or Wales.
The bid will be to play the Cup at Slaley Hall in Newcastle in the northeast. Blair said, 'As a northeast MP, I am well aware of the importance of sport to its people in the area.'
Bids were due at noon Wednesday with selection of the winner in January.
