Race to the PGA Tour Begins in Panama


Nationwide TourAnd so it begins once again. For the 17th consecutive year, hundreds of PGA Tour wannabes will battle one another for the privilege of playing golf on its grandest stage.
The Nationwide Tour kicks off its 2006 season in Panama. Its the first of 31 tournaments to be contested this year on the secondary circuit. And when its all said and done, at least 20 players will be promoted to the PGA Tour.
This is the third playing of the Movistar Panama Championship, which is contested at Panama Golf Club (par 70, 6,818 yards). And its proven to be a wonderful launching pad to a players season.
Jimmy Walker captured the inaugural event in 2004 and went on to become the tours leading money earner that season. Vance Veazey was then the victor a year ago and went on to finish 17th on the money list.
This years field consists of 132 players, and includes some notable names, like Briny Baird, Notah Begay III and Matt Kuchar.
The purse is $525,000, with $94,500 ' and a great head start on his peers ' going to the winner.
