Richart Starts Strong in Michigan


WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- Willard Richart of Ann Arbor, Mich., shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after the first of qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Richart, 44, opened on the Wilmington Country Club's South Course, site of the match-play portion of the event for players 25 and older. Defending champion George Zahringer, 50, of New York opened with a 75 on the par-70 North Course.
Trip Kuehne of Dallas was a stroke back along with Paul Natale Jr. of Clearwater, Ill.; Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C.; Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn.; David Noll Jr. of Dalton, Ga.; and Nathan Smith of Brookville, Pa.
The low 64 players after the second round of qualifying will advance to match play.
