Rose Gets Late Invite in South Africa

England's Justin Rose, last week's Alfred Dunhill Championship runner-up, was granted a last-minute sponsors invitation to the Mercedes-Benz South Africa Open. Rose missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole to lose by one stroke to Adam Scott. Scott withdrew from this week's event citing a nagging knee injury.
Rose's invitation had been promised to Shane Howe, but Howe offered up his invitation after Rose's brilliant second place performance. Howe then attempted to earn a spot in the event in a qualifying round - but failed to do so.
Sunshine Tour executive Louis Martin praised Howe's generous act, 'Howe's unselfish gesture created the way for Justin Rose to participate in the championship. In the interest of the championship and the golfing public in general, Shane's magnanimous behavior is highly commendable.'
Had he not received an invitation Rose would have needed to play in the qualifying round. Rose currently sits in second place on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit.
