The large food and drug retailer, with 1,793 stores throughout the United States and Canada, has been a title sponsor with the LPGA for the past seven years and now will have its name on two events, the latest to be renamed the Safeway Ping.
Safeway is extremely proud to announce our affiliation with another high profile LPGA event, especially the Phoenix tournament which has achieved an enviable track record across the past two decades, Steve Burd, chairman, president & CEO of Safeway said. The history of the LPGA in Phoenix is rich with tradition. Safeway is happy to become a part of the great heritage of LPGA golf in Arizona.
The 2003 tournament, scheduled for March 17-23 at Moon Valley Country Club, will still benefit Banner Health, which supports local cancer programs in Arizona.
The tournament regularly draws one of the strongest fields of the year and has a $1,000,000 purse.
We are excited about the future of the LPGA in Phoenix, John Graham, tournament chairman, said. The relationship with Safeway is absolutely wonderful news for our community, underscoring the companys investment in our economy and community affairs.
Safeway will continue to be the title sponsor in the Portland event, the Safeway Classic.
