SBC Championship Changes Venue

The SBC Championship will have a new home for Senior PGA Tour players in 2002, as the 17-year-old tournament moves to Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.
The 2002 SBC Championship precedes the season-ending Senior Tour Championship at Gaillardia. It will take place Oct. 14-20 with a purse of $1.45 million. The SBC tournament had been held since 1985 at The Dominion Country Club.
Oak Hills Country Club has a long history of championship golf having hosted the Texas Open from 1961 to 1966 and again from 1977 to 1994. It also hosted the inaugural Tour Championship, then called the Nabisco Championships of Golf, which was won by Tom Watson in 1987.
The course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1921. Jay Moorish made enhancements to the course in 1983. The championship course will measure approximately 6,800 yards for the SBC Championship and play to a par of 71.
The agreement with Oak Hills covers the 2002, 2003 and 2004 SBC Championship events. Proceeds from the annual event will continue to benefit charities in the San Antonio area. The SBC Championship has generated more than $2 million for San Antonio charities since its inception in 1985.
'SBC is proud of its long association with the event and the millions of dollars it has generated for local charities,' said Forrest Miller, president and CEO of SBC Southwestern Bell. 'We're excited about Oak Hills hosting the event and we're grateful to the Dominion Country Club and its members for their years of supporting the tournament.'
'We're looking forward to working with Oak Hills and its members as we transition to this wonderful new venue in 2002,' Tournament Director Buddy Cook said. 'With the club's past successes of hosting many of the Senior Tour's players, there will be much anticipation for this year's event. We're as excited as ever to be bringing the Senior Tour to San Antonio and continuing to make significant contributions to San Antonio charities.'
SBC sponsors three tournaments on the Senior PGA Tour. In addition to the SBC Championship, the company sponsors the SBC Senior Classic to be played Feb. 25 - March 3 outside Los Angeles, Calif., and the SBC Senior Open in Chicago in July.
