Semifinals Set for Seniors


USGAThe semifinals of the 48th U.S. Senior Amateur are set as Wednesday's matches wittled the field from eight to four at the par-72, 6,596-yard Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Former U.S. Amateur champion Vinny Giles, 55, was defeated 2-and-1 by Curt Madson, 61, after losing three straight holes on the back nine. Madson, the oldest remaining player in the field, went from 1-down at the 12th to 2-up after the 15th, then halved the 16th and 17th for his victory.
Ive been playing well this week and was really looking forward to playing somebody of Vinnys stature, Madson said. Its really fun to have that kind of competition.
Madson will Greg Reynolds, 55, of Grand Blanc, Mich., who advanced to the semi's with a comfortable 4-and-2 victory over Bill Heldmar, 61, of Tulsa, Okla.
In the lower bracket Mark Bemowski from Mukwonago, Wis., will face-off against Bill Baloh of Herminie, Pa., for an entry into the finals on Thursday afternoon.
Bemowski, 56, defeated Alex Tarumianz with a big comeback that started at the 13th. Down three at that point, Bemowski preceded to win five of the next six holes for the 2-up win.
Had it not been for my shaky putting, Id have done really well out there, Bemowski said. Tee to green, Ive been pretty good and if I just watch myself on the greens, I think Ill be competitive.
In the other quarterfinal match, Baloh, 58, ousted Gary Koprivica in 20 holes. Baloh two-putted for par on the last hole as Koprivica was unable to knock in a six-footer that would of continued the match.
