Senior Stars Prepare for Match Play Conclusion

RSS

Bob Charles bettered his age by a stroke, as the left-hander from New Zealand went around the Boone Valley Country Club in 64 strokes Friday.

At 8-under-par 136, the 65-year-old finished part of a four-way tie for the lead at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Match Play Championship.

The other three who ended on the leading mark were Tom Watson (66), Hale Irwin (68) and Dave Stockton (69). Leonard Thompson (68) was two strokes back at minus-six, and Jim Thorpe (68), Tom Kite (66) and
Bob Gilder (69) were three off the pace.

Not that it really matters though. Now the fun begins for the clan of 50-and-overs. The top-16 players following Fridays second round will advance into Saturdays third round, whereby match play becomes the rule.

The No. 1 finisher (Irwin) will face the No. 16 slot (Lanny Wadkins), the No. 2 position will play the No. 15, and so forth.

Whatever fate the weekend brings, for Charles at least, it was Fridays round that hell most likely never forget.

Im more excited about that than anything else, Charles exclaimed of his superb score.

The 64 matched his best round in competition since the second round of the 1998 Kroger Senior Classic, and he is now in position to take his 24th victory on the Senior Tour.

Not if Irwin, Watson and the rest of the gang have anything to do with it, however. They all seemed to stick with the same basic game plan during the first two days, and it has thus far payed off.

I didnt want to play too conservatively, but I didnt want to be so aggressive that I made some mistakes out there, commented Irwin following his round.

Watson echoed his thoughts.

My objective was to try and qualify among the top-16 players today and thats what I did. It seemed like most players were just trying to stay ahead of the pack.

Now the pack narrows down to 16. Unfortunately, for those who win their matches, they will be playing upwards of 36 holes on both Saturday and Sunday.
