Senior Tour Gets New Event

The Senior Tour has officially gained a new tournament for the 2001 season.
The SAS Championship will commence Sept. 21-23 at the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.
Formerly the Championship, SAS stepped in when the former sponsors tie with the Senior Tour abruptly ended.
While the event was originally slated for the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, tournament coordinators were eventually forced to search outside of the state.
Prestonwood was an obvious fit, and indications should prove it to be a solid venue. It has played host to professional golf before, when the Buy.Com Carolina Classic made stops between the years of 1994 to 1997.
Among other things, the purse for the SAS has been raised to $1.6 million. Hale Irwin is the defending champion.
