College Central presented by PINGThe 26th-ranked SMU women's golf team stormed back in the final round to overcome a nine-stroke deficit and win the 12th-annual 'Mo'Morial Invitational at water-logged Traditions Golf Club. The Mustangs carded rounds of 318-309-315=942 to edge host Texas A&M and Kent State by one stroke.
Despite missing last week's event with minor injuries suffered in a car accident, SMU was led by standout Laura Cross, who tied for fourth individually with rounds of 77-74-82=233. Cross finished just three strokes behind winner Samantha Richdale of Illinois State, who finished at 75-73-82=230.
Sophomore Kristina Rothengatter posted the low-team score of the day to finish at 81-79-76=160-T11th. Reigning WAC Golfer of the Week Jennifer Ackerson also rallied on Tuesday with a score of 79-81-78=238-T15th. SMU also got a top-15 finish from Lacey Jones (81-78-79=238-T15th), and Ashley Deatherage wrapped up the SMU list at 83-78-85=246-T43rd.
Heavy rains over the weekend made for difficult conditions on the long, 6,386-yard par-72 course, leading to high scores.
'The conditions were windy, wet and brutal, and it was a very challenging course,' said SMU Coach Todd Selders, 'But this is a big win for us. I'm so proud of our squad.'
